Job Description
The Environmental Management Services (EMS) Division of the VA Northern California Healthcare System, located at the Stockton VA Medical Center in Stockton, California, is committed to providing a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for Veterans, their families, and staff. As part of a federal healthcare system dedicated to serving those who have served the nation, the EMS division plays an essential role in supporting the overall mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The Stockton VA Medical Center delivers quality healthcare services, promoting wellness and recovery, backed by facilities maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.
The Housekeeping Aid position within the EMS Division is pivotal in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitary conditions of the VA facilities. This role is vital to the patient care experience, as a clean environment ensures patients, staff, and visitors a safe and comfortable atmosphere during their stay. Working under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee, the Housekeeping Aid performs a range of duties encompassing light and heavy cleaning assignments. These tasks include routine housekeeping responsibilities that maintain patient wards, rooms, restrooms, corridors, offices, and other facility areas.
Housekeeping Aids at the Stockton VA Medical Center are trusted professionals who work alongside a team mostly made up of fellow Veterans, creating a workplace culture that values service, camaraderie, and dedication. These aids promptly address spills, discard trash, change light bulbs, vacuum floors, mop, scrub, polish surfaces, and maintain furniture arrangement. The role requires a proactive approach, attention to detail, and the ability to perform their duties efficiently and independently with minimal supervision. Varying work schedules, including rotating weekends and holidays, ensure continuous cleanliness and safety standards throughout the healthcare center.
The Housekeeping Aid contributes significantly to the patient care setting by supporting environmental hygiene and infection control practices, which are crucial in healthcare facilities. This position demands commitment, reliability, and the physical capability to handle housekeeping duties that sometimes involve moderate physical exertion. While no specific length of training or experience is mandated, candidates are expected to demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary for the role. This includes proficiency in safety practices, handling cleaning equipment, following directions accurately, and maintaining a dependable work ethic.
This position involves a one-year probationary period to evaluate performance and suitability for continued employment. The role does not have relocation incentives and is a frontline contributor to the VA's mission of honoring America's Veterans by providing exceptional care and services in a clean and safe environment. Employment with the VA offers the opportunity to be part of a federal workforce dedicated to serving Veterans with honor and integrity while enjoying a stable and rewarding career with federal benefits.
