Job Description
The Housekeeping Aid position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division of the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA. This facility is part of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, a federal agency dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to veterans. The VA Medical Center is a key institution that serves veterans by delivering high-quality medical and support services, including inpatient and outpatient care, ensuring the health and wellbeing of those who have served the nation. As a federal employer, the VA offers a stable, meaningful career with a structured work environment and the potential for personal and professional growth.
This specific role is classified under the WG 2 pay scale with a salary range of $18.04 to $21.05 per hour, reflecting its status as a permanent, full-time position. The Housekeeping Aid works primarily within patient and non-patient care areas, supporting the cleanliness and safety standards necessary for quality healthcare delivery. Working under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor or a designee, the incumbent is responsible for executing a range of janitorial and custodial tasks throughout the medical facility. This position requires a detail-oriented individual capable of independently managing cleaning duties or collaborating as part of a team. The role involves the use of various cleaning techniques and equipment to maintain sanitary conditions in high-traffic areas that are critical to patient care and staff operations.
The Housekeeping Aid’s responsibilities extend beyond routine cleaning; they include floor maintenance, wall washing, cleaning doors and door frames, baseboards, stairwells, and other surfaces utilizing methods such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, and buffing. The position occasionally involves the use of heavy, industrial-grade powered equipment, requiring the operator to perform minor maintenance on these tools to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, the role involves proper disposal of waste and regulated medical refuse, as well as sanitation of restrooms and shower facilities to meet rigorous hygiene standards. The physical demands of the job include continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing, indicating the need for stamina and physical dexterity.
This position not only supports a clean and efficient healthcare environment but also contributes to the overarching mission of the VA Medical Center, which is to deliver exceptional care and service to veterans. The appointment type is permanent, with no supervisory responsibilities or promotion potential attached, making it ideal for individuals seeking stable employment with clear, defined duties. The VA Medical Center’s commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures an equitable hiring process. The job is not remote or telework eligible and does not require travel or relocation reimbursement. Benefits are comprehensive and aligned with federal employment standards, offering medical, dental, vision, retirement plans, and paid leave among others. This role is a vital component of maintaining a safe, clean hospital environment conducive to healing and patient comfort.
