Job Description

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is renowned for its dedicated commitment to providing exceptional healthcare and support services to veterans of the United States military. The Environmental Management Services Division within the VA Medical Center/Clinics plays a pivotal role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and sanitation standards necessary for a healthcare environment. This division focuses on ensuring that VA facilities provide a safe and healthy environment for veterans, staff, and visitors. The VA consistently upholds the highest standards in healthcare facility maintenance, cleanliness, and infection control to promote recovery and wellness among its patient population.

This permanent, full-time position as a Housekeeping Aid is based in the Spark M Matsunaga Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center located in Honolulu, HI. The hourly salary for this role ranges from $19.38 to $22.65, offering a competitive compensation package in line with federal wage standards. The Housekeeping Aid will be an integral part of the Environmental Management Services Division, performing a comprehensive range of janitorial and custodial services essential to the upkeep of medical facilities. Key responsibilities include textile distribution and inventory management, sanitizing and disinfecting patient rooms and common areas, waste removal including medical waste, cleaning windows, walls, blinds, and furniture, and floor maintenance such as sweeping, scrubbing, polishing, and applying floor finishes.

The role demands physical stamina and dexterity, requiring continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment like industrial buffers and wall washers is occasionally necessary. A keen eye for detail and a commitment to hygienic standards are critical, as the cleanliness of the facilities directly impacts infection control and patient safety. This position also involves replenishing essential hygiene supplies in restrooms and public areas and rearranging furniture and patient equipment to facilitate thorough cleaning.

Applicants will benefit from a structured onboarding process and must comply with certain employment conditions, including U.S. citizenship, background investigations, and a pre-employment physical. The position offers the opportunity to work in a federal healthcare environment, contributing directly to the wellbeing of veterans. Selected candidates will also undergo a 1-year probationary period to evaluate performance and fit within the organization.

Working within the VA Medical Center provides not only a meaningful career but also access to a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and more, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to its workforce. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about public service and maintaining a safe, clean, and comfortable healthcare environment.

The Housekeeping Aid position does not require specific educational qualifications but does require experience or training that demonstrates capability in custodial tasks. Applicants are encouraged to provide detailed descriptions of their experience in their resumes. The federal employment framework also supports inclusive hiring policies where volunteer experience and part-time roles are recognized as valuable for qualification evaluation.

In summary, this role offers the opportunity to serve veterans and contribute to the operational excellence of a federal healthcare facility while enjoying stable employment with benefits. Candidates who are diligent, physically capable, committed to high cleanliness standards, and eager to contribute to the VA mission are highly encouraged to apply.
