Job Description
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Bedford Healthcare System is a vital institution dedicated to providing exceptional health care services to Veterans and their families. Located in Bedford, Massachusetts, the VA Bedford campus hosts a range of medical and support services aimed at ensuring Veterans receive the highest level of care and comfort. The Environmental Management Services (EMS) team plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the facility, contributing significantly to the overall patient care experience. This department ensures that the hospital environment is hygienic and well-maintained, which is essential for infection control and the wellbeing of Veterans, visitors, and staff alike. The VA Bedford Healthcare System is committed to fostering a respectful and supportive workplace, emphasizing the value of its employees and the honor of serving those who have served their country.
The role offered is that of a Housekeeping Aid within the Environmental Management Services at the VA Bedford campus. This is a full-time permanent position, classified under the WG-2 pay scale, offering a salary range of $19.54 to $22.79 per hour. The position requires flexibility in working night shifts, weekend day shifts, and weekend nights, based on the facility's needs. Housekeeping Aids at the VA are integral to maintaining clean and safe patient environments, which directly impacts patient outcomes and satisfaction. The job involves performing a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waste disposal, and cleaning various public and patient areas such as wards, patient rooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, and shower rooms. Housekeeping Aids are also responsible for cleaning light fixtures, windows, walls, and ceilings, often requiring the use of ladders and handling of equipment like floor scrubbers and vacuum cleaners. They ensure that supplies such as toilet tissues and towel dispensers are regularly replenished.
Working as a Housekeeping Aid at the VA involves a strong commitment to following procedures, maintaining safety standards, and working with minimal supervision to quickly and effectively address spills and other immediate cleaning needs. This role is critical to upholding the high standards of the VA healthcare system and directly supports the health and safety of Veterans who rely on these services daily. Veterans themselves comprise a significant portion (approximately 85%) of the housekeeping staff, fostering a shared sense of pride and mission among employees. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, and meet several employment conditions including a background check, drug screening, and compliance with selective service registration requirements. While no specific educational qualifications are required, candidates must demonstrate competence through relevant experience or training and the ability to perform the job duties effectively. The VA emphasizes equal opportunity employment and encourages applications from individuals who are committed to advancing the public interest and the mission of the VA healthcare system.
