Job Description
The hiring organization is a healthcare facility dedicated to providing a clean and safe environment for patients, healthcare professionals, and visitors. This facility is committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene across all patient care areas, surgical zones, public and private restrooms, conference rooms, lobbies, offices, elevators, and stairwells. As a vital part of the healthcare team, the organization understands that a sanitized and well-maintained environment significantly contributes to patient recovery and overall health outcomes. The facility employs various specialized roles, including environmental service workers, who play a crucial role in infection control and maintaining the functionality and safety of the environment.
The role offered is Environmental Service Worker within this healthcare setting. The Environmental Service Worker is responsible for cleaning and maintaining diverse areas throughout the facility, ensuring that all environmental surfaces are sanitized and well-kept. This includes tasks such as dusting and damp mopping floors, cleaning ceilings, vents, walls, doors, furniture, beds, bathroom fixtures, and windows. The role also involves assisting in cleaning emergency spills, replacing cubicle and window coverings, and properly gathering and disposing of waste, recyclable materials, medical waste, and hazardous trash following strict infection control guidelines. The worker is expected to manage inventories related to linens, cleaning supplies, and paper products, ensuring timely replenishment and proper organization of housekeeping closets.
Additional responsibilities include cleaning and preparing dismissal and transfer units, distributing non-medical supplies, filling and cleaning supply dispensers, and reporting any mechanical failures or unsafe conditions to supervisors. This role requires an individual capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting weights up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and crawling. The Environmental Service Worker must operate various cleaning tools and equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, mopping machines, buffers or burnishers, automatic scrubbers, and stepladders up to six feet. Operating communication devices like telephones, zone phones, and pagers is also part of the job.
There are no formal educational or licensure requirements for this position, and no previous experience is necessary, making it an entry-level opportunity in the healthcare environment. However, the ideal candidate should demonstrate excellent customer service skills, the ability to follow written and oral instructions, communicate effectively with others, and work independently while understanding the physical layout of the facility. The Environmental Service Worker must be aware of and adhere to departmental policies and procedures and consistently perform duties without disrupting the operations of doctors, nurses, patients, or other staff members.
The working conditions entail exposure to strong germicidal solutions, cleaning chemicals, temperature changes, soiled linen, and infectious waste such as blood and body fluids. Therefore, the incumbent must be familiar with policies and procedures related to handling infectious and hazardous waste, including appropriate use of protective clothing. This role requires standing and walking throughout shifts and the ability to perform demanding physical tasks consistently for the duration of the workday.
Overall, this position is a vital part of the healthcare facility's commitment to patient safety, comfort, and well-being. The Environmental Service Worker ensures that the environment remains spotless, organized, and safe for everyone within the facility. This position offers a meaningful entry into healthcare services with opportunities to develop valuable skills in a hospital or clinical setting.
