Job Description

Stanislaus County is a public service organization dedicated to maintaining a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for its over 4,900 employees. As an employer, the County’s General Services Agency is committed to providing high-quality working environments across its facilities. The Facilities Maintenance team plays an essential role in their mission by keeping County buildings and workspaces orderly, sanitized, and well-maintained to support the County’s various operations. This team is tasked with upholding standards that promote health, safety, and efficiency throughout all government facilities in Stanislaus County.

Currently, the General Services Agency is seeking candidates for the position of Housekeeper/Custodian, a role vital in both medical/clinic and general facilities/maintenance settings. These custodians help guarantee the cleanliness and sanitation of County buildings, including offices, conference rooms, bathrooms, lobbies, and other common areas. The job involves working with various cleaning equipment and supplies, including some heavy floor-maintenance machines, and adhering to established safety and hygiene protocols.

This is a shift work position, which means incumbents may work during different hours, including weekends, with potential eligibility for shift differential pay. The Housekeeper/Custodian role requires individuals who can efficiently disinfect patient rooms and medical equipment in clinical settings, safely handle infectious waste, and maintain general maintenance such as cleaning floors, furniture, and outdoor areas. Additionally, custodians in the facilities environment may respond to unexpected clean-up needs, repair minor building issues, and assist other departments by moving supplies and furniture.

Performance of the job duties requires initiative, the ability to work independently following general supervision, and attention to detail. Custodians must be physically capable of performing tasks such as lifting and moving furniture, as well as using personal protective equipment when handling hazardous materials. Since this role supports public health standards, successful candidates must be proficient in English to understand safety guidelines, interpret chemical hazard information, and communicate effectively with supervisors and peers.

This position is ideal for individuals with prior janitorial experience who are looking to contribute to public service while working in a dynamic and essential role. It is also a Veterans’ Preference Program eligible classification, welcoming applicants with military backgrounds. The recruitment will close after receiving 100 applications or by the deadline of July 17, 2026. Applicants are reminded to submit fully completed applications as resumes alone will not suffice.

The application process includes a written examination in early August 2026, followed by a panel interview. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list applicable for up to eighteen months and could be considered for future vacancies. A full background check conducted with the District Attorney’s office and a pre-employment drug screening are part of the hiring requirements. Stanislaus County also provides accommodations for applicants with disabilities or religious convictions during the recruitment process.

Overall, the Housekeeper/Custodian position offers an opportunity to be a critical part of the County’s commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for employees and visitors. The role supports public health and operational excellence while providing on-the-job training, experience with specialized equipment, and the chance to work in a community-focused organization that values dedication and professionalism.
