Job Description
The University of Oklahoma, located in Norman, is a renowned public research university committed to excellence in education, research, and community service. The university's Campus Operations department plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient environment that supports the educational mission of the institution. Within this department, the Safety and Housekeeping team is dedicated to ensuring that all campus facilities are maintained to high standards of cleanliness and safety, creating an inviting atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
This particular role is a Service/Maintenance position based in Norman, Oklahoma, offering an hourly wage of $18.00, which is targeted and based on experience. The position is full-time, with a work schedule from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. However, it may require weekend shifts, scheduled in advance, and overtime work as needed. This role is designated as 'essential' during emergency closures, which means the employee may be required to remain on campus overnight during weather-related or other emergencies, ensuring the safety and operational continuity of campus facilities.
The Supervisory Housekeeper position is responsible for overseeing a group of housekeeping workers while actively participating in a variety of housekeeping and maintenance tasks. The role demands both leadership and hands-on involvement. Duties include directing and inspecting the work of housekeeping crews, training new employees, and ensuring adherence to health and safety standards. Supervisory responsibilities also include completing clerical duties such as managing payroll, reviewing time and attendance records, and handling essential human resources tasks like interviewing, training, and implementing positive discipline measures.
The role also requires supervising crews during special jobs like waxing floors and window washing, indicating a need for versatility and attention to detail in various cleaning and maintenance activities. Minor maintenance and repairs on floor care equipment are additional responsibilities, highlighting the technical aspects of the job. The employee will serve in an on-call duty rotation, supporting the campus's operational needs during non-standard hours.
Candidates must meet specific educational and experience requirements, including a high school diploma or GED and at least 18 months of housekeeping or custodial experience with six months in a supervisory capacity. A valid driver’s license is essential, and hiring is contingent upon a successful background check and driver’s license verification. Post Offer Employment Testing (POET) is also required.
This position is ideal for organized individuals with strong leadership skills who are committed to maintaining high standards of campus cleanliness and safety. The work environment is dynamic and occasionally demands flexibility in scheduling to respond to emergency situations. The University of Oklahoma offers a supportive workplace with benefits eligibility, making this a valuable career opportunity for candidates seeking stability and growth in a campus operations setting.
