Job Description
The Guthrie Theater is a renowned non-profit arts organization located in the historic Mill District along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Known for its exceptional theater productions, the Guthrie is committed to engaging talented theater artists in the exploration of both classic and contemporary plays. Established as a cornerstone of the Twin Cities arts community, the Guthrie plays a vital role in connecting local audiences to powerful stories and world-class performances. The theater is deeply rooted in its community and values Artistic Excellence, Community, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Fiscal Responsibility. With a dedicated team of over 500 artists, staff, and support personnel, the Guthrie prides itself on creating an environment that fosters creativity and inclusivity, making it a leading arts organization in the 21st century.
The role of Housekeeper within the Environmental Services department at the Guthrie Theater is pivotal to maintaining the high standards of cleanliness and sanitation necessary to ensure an exceptional experience for patrons and staff alike. Reporting to the Associate Director of Facilities, Housekeepers work collaboratively with the Environmental Services Assistant Manager, Housekeeping Leads, and other team members to uphold building maintenance and sanitation protocols throughout the theater. This position is characterized by a flexible, part-time schedule that averages six worked shifts per week, frequently organized as three days with two shifts each to fit the dynamic schedule of theatrical performances that often take place in the evenings and weekends.
Housekeepers at the Guthrie Theater play an essential role in preserving the theater's welcoming atmosphere by performing a variety of cleaning duties, including window and glass cleaning, restroom sanitation, floor care including vacuuming and mopping, carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, and general upkeep of multiple building surfaces. Their work ensures the theater environment meets health and safety regulations, controlling infection and maintaining patron comfort. Employees must be comfortable operating custodial equipment safely, using cleaning chemicals according to specifications, and stocking supplies for both employee and visitor areas. This position requires physical stamina to stand, squat, kneel, and reach throughout shifts, sometimes extending late into the night following performances.
Aside from technical duties, Housekeepers are expected to embody and promote the Guthrie's core values by contributing to an inclusive, respectful workplace that honors diversity of identity, experience, and perspective. The organization strongly encourages candidates from underrepresented groups in theater and those with transferable skills and passion for the arts to apply, even if they do not meet every qualification listed. The position offers a competitive hourly wage of $16.82 and includes benefits such as accruing Guthrie Sick Time, subsidized transit passes, discounted parking and bike rentals, complimentary and discounted tickets to productions, and other employee perks like wellness programs and affinity groups.
This is a year-round role, not limited to seasonal employment, requiring commitment beyond mid-September 2026. Applicants must be prepared for a flexible working schedule reflective of the theater’s performance calendar, including evenings and weekends as needed. The Guthrie is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse workforce and offers an equitable work environment that respects and celebrates differences. The position is part of a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 13 and is designated as non-benefits eligible. Prospective candidates must submit a resume for consideration.
