The Housekeeper position at Independence Village of Des Moines is a vital role responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of residents' apartments and public areas according to stringent schedules and established procedures. This role also involves performing laundry duties in commercial laundry facilities, utilizing various cleaning machines and equipment. As a Housekeeper, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the comfort and well-being of residents by upholding high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. The job entails thorough cleaning of all assigned areas, following department standards and processes that ensure both the health and satisfaction of residents and visitors. You will need to operate various cleaning equipment such as buffers, extraction machines, vacuums, and commercial laundry equipment efficiently and safely. Independent decision-making, yet compliance with instructions, is critical to executing daily tasks effectively.

The position requires tactfulness and excellent communication skills to interact appropriately with associates, residents, family members, visitors, government personnel, and the general public. Adherence to safety standards, especially related to cleaning compounds and disinfectants, is mandatory to maintain a safe working and living environment for all. You will also be responsible for using supplies economically, reporting equipment and supply needs, and assisting with additional duties as assigned by the Housekeeping Lead.

Working conditions involve standing for long periods, occasional lifting of objects up to 25 pounds, and the ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English. The role demands attention to detail, the ability to sit, stand, and walk during shifts, and effective handling of equipment and paperwork. The environment is moderately noisy and may require occasional travel to different community locations.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One to three years related experience or training
  • Prior housekeeping experience preferred
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Fluent English reading, writing, and speaking
  • Ability to operate commercial laundry and cleaning equipment
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to follow safety and cleaning protocols

Job Duties

  • Cleans all areas as assigned according to the departmental standards, process, and procedures
  • Maintain clean and sanitary conditions in assigned areas as directed, according to established standards, observing proper cleaning technique
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions and follow instructions
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with associates, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions concerning the mixing of cleaning compounds, liquids, disinfecting solutions, etc
  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident's condition
  • Uses supplies in an economical and prudent manner
  • Reports supply and equipment needs to supervisor for replenishing
  • Ability to operate buffers, extraction equipment, vacuums, and all commercial laundry equipment
  • Additional duties as assigned or needed by Housekeeping Lead
