Job Description

Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is a community-based healthcare organization dedicated to providing high-quality medical services across multiple campuses, including the Somerville Campus. CHA serves a vibrant and diverse population, with a strong commitment to health equity and excellence in care. The Alliance is not only focused on healing and treatment but also on community engagement, research, and public health initiatives aimed at reducing barriers to healthcare access for underserved populations. At CHA, employees are valued, supported with competitive salaries, benefits, and professional development opportunities, and are part of a dynamic and mission-driven organization that believes healthcare is a right for everyone.

The Environmental Services department at CHA plays a crucial role in maintaining the hospital's commitment to safety, cleanliness, and infection prevention. This department is essential to the well-being of patients, staff, and visitors alike, as a sanitary environment directly influences patient outcomes and overall hospital experience. The full-time Environmental Services position at the CHA Somerville Campus offers a day shift role averaging 40 hours per week, including rotating weekends and holidays, reflecting the hospital’s continuous need for dedicated cleanliness and sanitation practices. This role is unionized under SH Laborers 381, offering job stability within a reputable healthcare system.

The Environmental Services team member is responsible for ensuring all hospital spaces, including patient rooms, operating rooms, and common areas, are cleaned thoroughly following standardized procedures that support infection control. Responsibilities include employing recognized cleaning methods such as the 7 steps of cleaning, performing specialized floor and upholstery care, and conducting terminal cleaning especially in sensitive areas like operating rooms. The role demands a keen attention to detail, adherence to strict protocols, and physical agility to meet the demands of the healthcare environment. Successful candidates will undergo a job-specific agility test to verify their ability to perform required duties.

This position is well-suited for individuals with a high school diploma or GED, and ideally at least six months of relevant experience, with one year preferred. Effective communication skills in English are necessary for understanding instructions and performing tasks safely and efficiently. CHA emphasizes a workplace free from discrimination and strives to foster an inclusive environment where all employees can thrive. They uphold equal employment opportunities and strictly prohibit any form of unlawful discrimination or hostile behavior.

Joining CHA means becoming part of an organization that not only prioritizes patient care but also values its workforce as a core asset. Employees contribute to a vision of better health outcomes and equity for all patients. With its proactive strategic plan, CHA supports a workplace culture built on compassion, community engagement, and continuous improvement. For those passionate about making a tangible difference in healthcare delivery through environmental services, this role offers meaningful career growth and the opportunity to contribute significantly to public health within a dynamic hospital setting.
