Job Description

This university is a prestigious higher education institution committed to fostering academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. It provides a supportive and dynamic environment for students, faculty, and staff across its multiple campuses. The institution prioritizes a clean, safe, and well-maintained environment to ensure an optimal learning and working experience for its community. This commitment extends to maintaining the physical campus through dedicated custodial and maintenance services. The university values its employees and strives to create an inclusive workplace where everyone contributes to the overall mission of the institution. The custodial team plays a crucial role in upholding the standards of cleanliness and functionality within various university facilities, encompassing academic buildings, residence halls, dining areas, athletic facilities, and administrative offices.

The role available is for custodial and maintenance staff responsible for cleaning, custodial, and simple maintenance duties at the university, primarily located at the Warwick Campus. Three positions are open; two positions typically operate Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, while one position works Tuesday through Saturday during the same hours. The schedule and campus assignments may be subject to change based on departmental needs. The custodial team members work independently following detailed instructions and daily custodial standards. Supervisory oversight is provided during and after task completion to ensure efficiency and quality. While these positions typically do not include direct supervision responsibilities, custodial workers are essential to maintaining the university's environment and supporting daily campus operations.

The position involves various cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, washing, polishing, and waxing floors, walls, windows, furniture, and equipment across multiple campus buildings. This includes offices, classrooms, laboratories, dining rooms, bathrooms, showers, residence halls, athletic and guest facilities, and public spaces. Additionally, custodial workers clean plumbing fixtures and collect and dispose of trash, recyclables, and other wastes responsibly. Beyond cleaning, duties may include assisting with moving office furniture, performing pest control measures, restocking washroom supplies, and reporting unusual situations or maintenance needs. Custodial staff also engage in outdoor tasks like cleaning sidewalks, lawn and garden maintenance, and snow removal when required.

The job includes operating various cleaning equipment such as buffers, wet/dry vacuums, floor scrubbing machines, carpet extractors, and pressure washers. Workers will also handle specialized cleaning tasks such as washing blinds and drapes, folding towels, and maintaining tools and equipment. Further, custodial staff assist in setting up equipment and conference rooms as requested by various user groups and may use computerized inventory systems to stock supplies efficiently. Safety awareness and the ability to report safety issues or necessary repairs are critical components of this role.

Applicants for these positions should have a working knowledge of cleaning equipment, materials, and methods, along with the ability to follow simple directions accurately. Educational qualifications typically include completion of eight school grades or equivalent, paired with relevant experience in custodial tasks. The university welcomes applicants who are authorized to work for any employer in the United States but does not sponsor employment visas, including student visas. Overall, this role provides an excellent career opportunity for individuals interested in routine custodial work within a supportive academic community, offering a stable work schedule and the chance to contribute meaningfully to the university environment.
