Job Description
The Physical Plant Department at this prestigious university is dedicated to fostering a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across the entire campus. It is responsible for providing a comprehensive range of services that include buildings and grounds maintenance, utilities management, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, and disposition of surplus property. In addition, this department plays a vital role in supporting the university's instructional and research programs by maintaining and improving all campus facilities to enhance educational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.
This organization manages 44 academic buildings, 14 residence halls, and seven farm buildings, ensuring that each area meets high standards of cleanliness and functionality. The Housekeeping Department, a critical component of the Physical Plant, delivers essential custodial services and supervises housekeeping contractors in residence halls to maintain impeccable standards throughout the university. The environment maintained by this team reflects the university's commitment to energy conservation, occupational safety and health, building renovation and repair, landscape design, and smooth event planning, all contributing to an optimal campus experience.
The Housekeeper role within this environment is essential for daily operations, responsible for cleaning both the interior and exterior of buildings using appropriate cleaning solutions and equipment. This includes operating standard commercial housekeeping machinery, maintaining the equipment, and ensuring it functions efficiently. The Housekeeper performs daily tasks such as sweeping, dust mopping, vacuuming floors, and removing spots and spills. They are also responsible for emptying trash and ash receptacles, replacing burned-out light bulbs, and cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, including replenishing various dispensers.
Weekly duties involve deeper cleaning tasks such as dusting office areas, conference rooms, and furniture, cleaning janitorial closets and equipment, dusting vents and blinds, and checking inventory levels of supplies. Moreover, project work assigned by supervisors may include stripping, waxing, and buffing floors, shampooing carpets, cleaning windows and light fixtures, tile and grout cleaning, graffiti removal, and assisting with special events and overtime as needed.
The role demands a physically fit individual capable of continuous walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and stair climbing. Attention to detail, safety in handling chemicals and equipment, and the ability to communicate effectively with both supervisors and the public are also vital. Job Duties
- Clean interior and exterior of buildings using appropriate cleaning solutions
- Operate standard commercial housekeeping machinery and maintain equipment
- Sweep, dust mop, vacuum all floors and damp mop to remove spots and spills
- Empty trashcans and ash urns
- Replace burned out light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
- Clean and sanitize restrooms including sinks, mirrors, and dispensers
- Sweep stairs and landings, dust railings, and clean glass surfaces
- Remove graffiti and polish stainless steel surfaces
- Inspect trash for recyclables and sort appropriately
- Perform weekly tasks such as cleaning janitor's closet and equipment, dusting office furniture and fixtures
- Check inventory and order supplies
- Perform project work including stripping, waxing, buffing floors, shampooing carpets, cleaning windows and fixtures
- Work special events and overtime as needed
- Work in other buildings as requested
- Report any repair work detected
