Job Description
Halekulani is a prestigious and historic hotel located in the heart of Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. With a rich legacy spanning over 100 years, Halekulani has become synonymous with elegant hospitality, impeccable service, and outstanding cuisine. The hotel is deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and values, celebrating its legacy through a commitment to the "art of service." Both Halekulani and its sister property, Halepuna Waikiki, prioritize cultural heritage and exceptional guest experiences, making them premier destinations for visitors seeking luxury and genuine aloha spirit. The establishments focus on creating memorable stays by blending tradition with modern comforts to ensure every guest feels welcomed and valued.
The Bartender role at Halekulani is an integral position that contributes significantly to the guest experience. This full-time role involves preparing and serving beverages in accordance with the hotel’s high standards and specifications. The Bartender is expected to possess comprehensive knowledge of all liquor brands, beers, non-alcoholic beverages, wines, and champagnes available across all outlets. They must be well versed in the designations of glassware, garnishes, and the specifics of the food and beverage menus, including preparation methods, ingredients, portions, and presentation styles.
Beyond beverage preparation, the Bartender is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in compliance with state and hotel regulations, adhering strictly to health and safety standards such as OSHA regulations and Department of Health guidelines. The role requires adherence to all state liquor laws, especially relating to the service of minors and intoxicated persons. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills are critical, as the Bartender must complete side duties related to opening, closing, inventory management, and accurate documentation using the hotel’s POS system and other operational software like Adaco.
The Bartender also plays a crucial role in guest interaction, providing exceptional service while showcasing deep knowledge of the hotel’s services, local attractions, and culinary offerings. They are expected to confidently describe menu items and make insightful suggestions to enhance the guest’s dining experience. This position supports the Bar Supervisor and management by keeping them informed of essential matters and ensuring smooth operations at the bar.
Applicants for this role must have a minimum of two years prior experience as a Bartender or Bar Back, along with a high school diploma or equivalent. They must be at least 21 years old to serve alcoholic beverages and have previous cashier experience. Licensing requirements include holding a Liquor Commission Card and certification from an alcohol awareness program, with additional certifications in liquor, wine, and food service preferred. A TB clearance is also mandatory, following state law requirements.
Working conditions include both indoor air-conditioned environments and outdoor settings with exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, noise levels, and potential exposure to fumes, dust, and chemicals. Physical demands require the ability to lift up to 40 pounds, reach six feet, and stand or maintain stationary positions for extended periods during shifts. This demanding yet rewarding role requires a candidate who is detail-oriented, highly organized, and adept at multitasking, with a strong commitment to maintaining positive guest relations at all times. Halekulani is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values diversity and inclusivity, ensuring a respectful workplace free from discrimination based on race, color, sex, age, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, disability, or any other protected class.
