Job Description
Located in the vibrant heart of Austin, Texas, the W Austin is a premier luxury hotel renowned for its innovative design, upscale amenities, and commitment to delivering an exceptional guest experience. As part of the Marriott International family, W Austin combines a cutting-edge lifestyle brand with sophisticated accommodations, making it a sought-after destination for both leisure and business travelers. The hotel features modern dining options, state-of-the-art event spaces, and a lively atmosphere that attracts a diverse clientele. Situated at 200 Lavaca Street, it stands as a landmark within downtown Austin, providing guests with easy access to the city's cultural attractions, entertainment venues, and business centers.
The role of Engineer at W Austin is a full-time, non-management position offering an hourly wage of $24.72. This position plays a crucial role within the hotel's Engineering and Facilities team, tasked with maintaining the property’s physical assets and ensuring that guest requests related to repairs and maintenance are addressed promptly and effectively. The engineer will act as a frontline responder for any maintenance issues, demonstrating excellent communication skills to interact directly with guests and customers to resolve problems efficiently, often with little to no supervision.
The responsibilities extend beyond reactive repairs; the engineer will actively perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure optimal functioning. This includes tasks such as cleaning, lubrication, and visual inspections to preemptively identify issues before they impact operations or guest experience. Familiarity with operating shut-off valves, managing maintenance inventory, and requisitioning necessary parts and supplies is essential to this role.
W Austin places a strong emphasis on technical proficiency in various engineering operations. Candidates should display the ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics related to plumbing and HVAC systems. The position requires above-average skills in multiple categories such as air conditioning, refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, pneumatics, electronic systems, carpentry, kitchen equipment, vehicle maintenance, energy conservation, and general building management. The role demands a comprehensive understanding of the safe use of hand and power tools to perform complex repairs on physical property, including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
In addition, the engineer will be expected to troubleshoot and repair various equipment such as pumps, motors, plumbing fixtures, electrical devices, air conditioning units, and pool heaters. The expertise required includes working knowledge of the Lockout/Tagout safety system and advanced computer programs that manage preventive maintenance and energy systems.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to conduct advanced troubleshooting of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems within a hotel environment, mentor junior engineers, and assume Engineer on Duty responsibilities, including system readings and property rounds. Adherence to company safety and security policies is paramount. The engineer is also responsible for maintaining a professional appearance and attitude, upholding confidentiality, and delivering exceptional guest service in keeping with W Austin’s high standards.
Physically, this role involves regular movement including lifting objects up to 50 pounds independently and collaboration for heavier items. The engineer should be comfortable navigating stairs, ramps, and ladders, and perform various physical activities such as bending, twisting, and stooping. Additionally, the ability to use computers for work-related information retrieval is necessary.
Preferred qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent complemented by vocational or technical training. Extensive experience in general maintenance, electrical and refrigeration work, parts management, and surface preparation and painting is highly valued, along with a minimum of two years of hotel engineering or maintenance experience. While supervisory experience is not required, possessing a valid driver’s license is mandatory. Universal Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) certification and compliance with applicable state and federal licensing requirements are also required for this position.
