Job Description

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. (NESL) is a prominent and privately held family-owned company established in 1924. As Pennsylvania's largest construction materials producer and supplier, NESL plays a vital role in the heavy highway construction industry. The company operates an extensive footprint across Pennsylvania and Western New York that includes 57 quarries, 3 sand deposits, 33 hot mix asphalt (HMA) plants, 21 fixed and portable ready mix concrete plants, and a lime distribution center. With over 1,800 employees, NESL prides itself on the philosophy of "Building America From the Ground Up," contributing significantly to rebuilding infrastructure and supporting communities sustainably. NESL's open and collaborative culture is fueled by strong values and dedication, fostering an environment where employees can thrive and grow their careers. The company is committed to equal opportunity employment and maintains a drug-free workplace ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all coworkers.

The Hot Mixed Asphalt Apprentice role is an exciting full-time opportunity at NESL's Barton Road HMA Plant. This role focuses on supporting daily batching operations and addressing the workplace needs related to commercial, residential, and municipal asphalt manufacturing. It is a hands-on position requiring physical labor along with a proactive and safety-focused attitude to ensure smooth, efficient, and safe operations throughout the production process. The starting hourly wage is $31.85, progressing to a full rate of $36.46 per hour. The position demands adaptability as working hours vary daily based on customer production requirements, including significant overtime during peak seasons.

As an apprentice, the successful candidate will work closely with the Plant Operator, supporting operations with a clear emphasis on safety-first practices. The job involves operating both small and heavy equipment, conducting routine inspections, performing visual walk-arounds of the plant, and maintenance activities to ensure operational efficiency and safety compliance. While prior experience in operating equipment is preferred, the apprentice will receive training and opportunities for skill development, potentially advancing to a full-time plant operator position in line with union agreements.

Working at the HMA plant means being prepared for various environmental conditions, including exposure to high heat and outdoor weather variations such as cold, wet, or hot environments. A mechanical aptitude is preferred to succeed in this role, along with good communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team. NESL values a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality work and continuous learning.

NESL offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, dental, 401k, vacation, and life insurance, reflecting the company’s commitment to employee well-being and career growth. Working at NESL provides a career path with opportunities for advancement within a stable, growing industry that takes pride in developing its coworkers from within. Joining NESL means contributing to a critical industry supporting infrastructure projects that have a lasting impact on communities and the nation.
