The position of Hospitality Operations Manager at Yale Hospitality is a leadership role with a strong emphasis on operational management, team supervision, and customer experience within the university's residential dining operation. Serving as the Ambassador for Yale Hospitality, this role entails direct oversight and support for an Area General Manager and Resident General Manager, reporting to the Managing Director of Residential Operations. With responsibility over a large zone of dining halls, the manager ensures that every detail—from food quality and preparation to service presentation and sanitation—is delivered at the highest standards during meal times. Leading a team of 25 to 30 unionized staff members and accomplished chefs, this professional is tasked with nurturing a positive and efficient work environment that fosters excellent service for students, faculty, and staff alike. The manager’s duties expand to developing service standards, managing customer service policies, conducting training sessions, and enforcing food safety and sanitation protocols, embodying a comprehensive approach to operational excellence and guest satisfaction. This full-time, on-site staff role requires not only managerial expertise but also an ability to build meaningful relationships with Yale’s academic and administrative constituencies, playing a pivotal part in enhancing the dining experience in one of the world’s leading universities.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in hotel/restaurant management or related field
  • At least 4 years of service management experience
  • ServSafe Certification
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to supervise unionized staff
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proficiency in food service and menu management systems
  • Ability to plan large-scale catering events
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks involving lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Commitment to adhering to safety, sanitation, and university policies
  • Experience managing budgets and financial reports
  • Ability to develop positive employee relations and handle grievances
  • Flexibility to work on-site as required
  • Willingness to undergo pre-employment background screening and health requirements

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in hotel/restaurant management or related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of service management experience or equivalent

Job Duties

  • Plan, organize and manage an operation within Yale Hospitality including residential student meals, executive dining, and conference services
  • Provide support to the Resident General Manager in the design, development, and creation of quality dining experiences and special events
  • Collaborate with the Area General Manager and Resident General Managers to maintain high customer service standards, food quality, and sanitation
  • Conduct regular inspections of food preparation, service areas, cleanliness, and employee compliance
  • Obtain guest feedback through surveys and direct engagement
  • Implement and monitor housekeeping, safety, and sanitary regulations
  • Supervise dining room operations during meal periods and special events
  • Monitor revenue and expenses through financial reports
  • Process payroll, schedule staff, and maintain attendance records
  • Support purchasing control and inventory management
  • Prepare operational reports, highlight trends, and recommend improvements
  • Interview, train, evaluate, and manage service and support staff
  • Maintain employee relations and resolve workplace issues
  • Conduct performance evaluations of team members
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures
