Job Duties

  • Become familiar with the facility's administrative structure as introduced in the pre-training orientation session
  • Report to the charge nurse all accidents/incidents, including those of unknown source
  • Report all changes in the resident's condition to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse as soon as practical
  • Answer phones, especially during mealtimes
  • Assist with errands for residents and staff
  • Assist with secretarial tasks at the nursing station, such as making copies and filing
  • Straighten resident closets and drawers, label resident belongings
  • Complete personal belonging form
  • Maintain orderly and clean resident rooms and common areas including utility rooms, showers, and day rooms
  • Follow established policies concerning exposure to blood/body fluids
  • Check frequently the residents unable to call for help
  • Answer call bells promptly and report needs to CNA/Nurse
  • Make rounds assisting residents by opening/closing blinds, straightening blankets, ensuring call bells are within reach
  • Turn all medications found in resident possession over to Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse
  • Monitor and report changes in room temperature, ventilation, lighting
  • Transport residents to and from meals, activities, outdoors
  • Provide residents with Reality Orientations as instructed
  • Pass linen and make unoccupied beds
  • Use wristband or photo card file to identify residents before serving meals
  • Clean feeder tables, wheelchairs, bedside/over-bed tables, urinals, bedpans, refrigerators, microwaves
  • Place supplies and briefs in resident rooms and common areas
  • Unpack and stock supply room when deliveries arrive
  • Replace trash can liners
  • Inform Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse of any changes in residents' condition
  • Pass snacks and trays to residents, including protective clothing covers and food preparation
  • Return trays to dietary
  • Assist residents with food identification and arrangements
  • Serve between meal and bedtime snacks as instructed
  • Keep residents' water pitchers clean, filled, and within easy reach
  • Collect and redistribute water pitchers for weekly cleaning
  • Check rooms for food articles and unauthorized food items
  • Learn and be aware of code system identifying special needs of residents
  • Ensure resident rooms are ready for receiving residents including admission kits
  • Greet and escort residents to rooms
  • Introduce resident to roommates and staff
  • Inventory and mark personal possessions
  • Store and assist with packing resident's clothing
  • Transport residents to new rooms or receiving areas
  • Perform all tasks according to policies and instructions
  • Follow work assignments and schedules
  • Cooperate with interdepartmental personnel
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and calm
  • Report defective equipment and hazardous conditions
  • Inform Nurse Supervisor of equipment and supply needs
  • Report occupational exposures
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information
  • Treat all residents with kindness, dignity, and respect
  • Knock before entering rooms
  • Report grievances, complaints, allegations of abuse or misappropriation
  • Honor resident's refusal of assistance and report accordingly
  • Attend all required training and orientation
  • Participate in OSHA and CDC in-service training
  • Wash hands before and after any resident service
  • Keep call systems within reach
  • Notify Nurse Supervisor of any resident leaving or missing
  • Follow safety precautions
  • Keep floors dry and report spills
  • Store supplies and equipment properly

  • Perform routine housekeeping related to nursing care
  • Store all tools and equipment before breaks or end of shift
