The Environmental Services Department at Harborview Medical Center plays a crucial role in supporting UW Medicine's 'Patients Are First' healthcare philosophy by maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for patients, visitors, and staff. This department encompasses housekeeping, linen management, and waste disposal services that together ensure the Facility maintains the highest standards of hygiene and safety in both patient and administrative areas.

Compensation for this role ranges from $21.84 to $29.40 per hour, with additional evening and weekend differential pay to recognize work during non-standard hours.
Under general supervision, the Hospital Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining cleanliness in both inpatient and non-patient areas, including offices and administrative spaces. This role requires diligence, attention to detail, and adherence to strict cleaning and safety protocols to ensure a disinfected and orderly environment. Primary responsibilities include cleaning and disinfecting furniture, fixtures, and equipment; removing and handling soiled linen appropriately; disinfecting and remaking patient beds; dusting and mopping floors with disinfectants; emptying and relining waste containers including regulated medical waste; and performing bloodborne pathogen and chemical spill containment and cleanup in accordance with established procedures.
Additionally, custodians engage in floor care activities such as stripping, cleaning, buffing, and applying finishes. They also conduct intermediate and terminal cleaning of surgical, obstetrical, and invasive procedure rooms, including thorough mopping and disinfecting, maintaining the sterile environment required in medical settings. Operation of carpet cleaners such as automated shampooers and extractors to maintain carpets is another important duty. Employees are expected to follow detailed written and verbal instructions on the use of chemicals, protective apparel, cleaning supplies, and equipment, ensuring safety for themselves and others.
Working at Harborview Medical Center means joining a team committed to challenge, collaboration, and compassion. UW Medicine supports its employees not only by fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment but also through competitive pay, benefits, and opportunities for professional growth. The role contributes directly to the health system's mission to improve public health through high-quality patient care and innovative medical research. This position is represented by the WFSE HMC union, and the hospital emphasizes equal employment opportunities fostering diversity and inclusion within its workforce.
