The position of Histotechnician I (Non-Certified) at Veracyte's San Diego location supports the company’s vital diagnostic functions by managing, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination by pathologists. This onsite role operates on a Tuesday to Saturday schedule from 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM and requires proficiency in microtomy, staining, equipment maintenance, and digital pathology support. The Histotechnician is pivotal in ensuring high-quality slide preparation through the execution of core laboratory procedures such as embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting of paraffin-embedded samples. This role demands flexibility as the technician must adjust scheduling and section assignments to meet dynamic laboratory needs efficiently. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1-3 years of experience in a histology laboratory including microtomy and H&E staining
- Knowledge of CLIA, New York, CAP and OSHA regulatory requirements
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Basic computer skills including data entry and use of laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
- Ability to work under general supervision
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including gloves, lab coats, and safety glasses
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
- Ability to perform repetitive movements of hands, arms, and legs
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
- Willingness to adapt schedule to meet laboratory workload including weekends
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Preferred associate or bachelor’s degree
- 1-3 years of histology laboratory experience including microtomy and H&E staining
- Knowledge of regulatory standards including CLIA, CAP, and OSHA
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS)
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement

Job Duties
- Prepare microscopic slides for diagnostic purposes, including processing, embedding, microtomy, and/or mounting of paraffin-embedded samples
- Performs routine H&E staining
- Recut blocks as requested by the pathologist in a manner that meets turnaround time and quality expectations
- Perform routine and non-routine activities associated with slide preparation according to established standard operating procedures
- Maintains histology equipment per laboratory standard operating procedures and manufacturer recommendations
- Pull slides/blocks from storage as requested
- Files paraffin blocks and microscope slides per standard operating procedures
- Prepares and monitors solutions and reagents for the automated stainers
- Participates in projects, research, and validation activities as assigned
- Restocks the laboratory to maintain appropriate inventory levels
- Respects and maintains confidentiality of client and patient information
- Maintains equipment and quality records to meet laboratory and compliance standards and ensures records are audit-ready
- Troubleshoots processing, microtomy, staining, and equipment issues
- Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and documents the activities
- Understands and follows all safety guidelines
- Familiar with CAP and CLIA regulations
- Strives to maintain a positive work environment
