Job Description

JAFCO is a well-established non-profit children’s organization dedicated to enhancing the lives and well-being of children with developmental disabilities. Located in Sunrise, Florida, JAFCO offers a wide range of essential services designed to support children and their families. The Children’s Ability Center, a core part of JAFCO’s mission, provides comprehensive care, education, and recreational activities tailored to meet the unique needs of its pediatric clients. As a community-focused organization, JAFCO prides itself on fostering an inclusive environment where children with special needs can thrive, engage, and grow safely and joyfully. The organization also emphasizes staff development and training to ensure high-quality care and support.

This hiring event is for Summer Camp Counselors and Direct Care Staff, roles that are integral to JAFCO’s commitment to nurturing and supporting children in their care throughout the summer and beyond. We are looking for over 30 full-time Summer Camp Counselors and part-time Direct Care Staff to join our dedicated team at the Children’s Ability Center. These positions are hands-on and require team members to be compassionate, patient, and highly motivated to work with children who have developmental disabilities. The opportunities include multiple shifts — summer camps, late afternoons, early evenings, as well as evening, overnight, and weekend shifts — providing flexibility for a variety of schedules. Compensation ranges from $15 to $18 per hour, depending on experience, offering a competitive wage for candidates passionate about making a meaningful impact in children’s lives. This role demands physical activity and stamina, including activities such as lifting up to 35 pounds, and standing or walking for up to four hours.

As a Summer Camp Counselor or Direct Care Staff member, you will be responsible for the physical, emotional, social, and recreational well-being of the children. This encompasses assisting with medical needs as directed by healthcare professionals, helping with meals and snacks, ensuring hygiene, and engaging children in fun, supportive, and safe activities. Attendance at staff meetings and ongoing in-service training sessions is also required to stay current with best practices and protocols. In addition, candidates must be prepared to consent to a Level 2 Fingerprint Background Check and hold CPR, First Aid, and Water Safety certifications, which are highly preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is required while a bachelor’s degree is preferred, emphasizing the importance of education combined with hands-on experience.

This is an exceptional opportunity for kind-hearted, patient caregivers who seek a rewarding role in a nurturing environment. By joining JAFCO, candidates will become part of a supportive team dedicated to improving the quality of life for some of the most vulnerable children in the community. Applicants are invited to apply in person at one of the upcoming hiring events on May 2nd or May 6th at the Children’s Ability Center in Sunrise, FL. This in-person hiring approach ensures meaningful interaction and immediate consideration of interested and qualified candidates. Join JAFCO in our mission to empower children with special needs by providing compassionate care and fostering their growth in a safe and welcoming setting.
