The Echo Sonographer I position is an entry-level role designed to support physicians by performing basic echocardiographic imaging and other related procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role is critical in assisting with the detection of cardiac issues such as blood flow irregularities and heart ailments, providing essential information that assists physicians in diagnosing conditions and developing effective patient treatment plans. This position involves mentorship and training to help the candidate gain competency in using various ultrasound imaging equipment and protocols.

The Echo Sonographer I ensures a safe patient environment by preparing the room and equipment, ensuring functionality and proper stocking for assigned procedures. Responsibilities include performing basic echocardiographic imaging procedures according to established protocols, producing preliminary interpretations of studies like 2D/Doppler and contrast studies, and assisting physicians during specialized procedures like pericardiocentesis. Effective communication with patients and families regarding procedure preparation is essential to ensure patient comfort and cooperation. The role requires collaborative work with interdisciplinary teams, including attending physicians, residents, and clinicians, to deliver optimal patient care.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Vocational/technical diploma or equivalent from accredited ultrasound school
  • Minimum 1 year experience as a cardiac sonographer
  • Basic Life Support certification required upon hire
  • Ability to obtain RDCS certification within 1 year of hire
  • Ability to obtain RCS certification within 1 year of hire

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Vocational/technical diploma or graduate of an accredited ultrasound school
  • 1 year experience as cardiac sonographer
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) certification within 1 year of hire
  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) certification within 1 year of hire

Job Duties

  • Performs basic echocardiographic imaging procedures using approved protocols
  • Performs preliminary interpretation of 2D/Doppler, pericardiocentesis, bubble, and contrast studies
  • Creates preliminary reports and presents them to physicians
  • Provides patient and family education regarding procedures and preparation
  • Assists physicians with echo imaging during procedures such as pericardiocentesis
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams including attending physicians, residents, and clinicians
  • Enters patient data accurately into ultrasound equipment
  • Maintains and cleans ultrasound equipment
  • Ensures adherence to sterile protocols and radiation safety
  • Reports critical findings promptly to the physician
  • Provides recommendations to improve laboratory operations and diagnostic quality
