Job Description
Flad Architects is a national architectural firm with a strong presence across the country through its ten offices. The Boston office focuses on serving clients primarily in the Science and Technology and Higher Education markets. Renowned for its creative and innovative approach, Flad is composed of intelligent and energetic professionals who strive to solve complex challenges that impact people's lives. The company embraces collaboration and is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment with a commitment to equal employment opportunities. This ensures that diverse candidates can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the firm's mission.
The position offered is an exciting leadership role within the Boston office that combines project execution, business development, client management, and operational leadership. The role is designed for a seasoned architectural professional who enjoys the challenge of developing strategies to identify and approach targeted clients. The ideal candidate will also be adept at recruiting, retaining, and mentoring staff while providing exemplary office leadership. This leadership position requires a hands-on approach, embodying the seller-doer model where the individual not only secures new projects but actively manages and executes them with an eye toward excellence in client satisfaction, quality, and profitability.
In terms of project responsibilities, the candidate will be directly accountable for delivering on project goals while maintaining the firm’s reputation for superior quality and client service. Clear communication of the client’s vision and goals is critical to success, as is the ability to guide teams in creating innovative, effective, and responsive solutions tailored to client needs and best practices.
This role also involves significant business development efforts. The successful candidate will nurture existing client relationships and actively seek new business opportunities within the science and higher education sectors, aligning with Flad’s core competencies. Integral to success in this role is the ability to research potential clients, develop targeted strategies, and participate strategically in client interviews to win new projects. As part of business development, managing and maintaining key repeat clients is essential, ensuring sustained growth and stability for the Boston office and the firm overall.
Leadership in this position extends beyond project and business development responsibilities. The individual will provide consistent day-to-day leadership for the Boston office, collaborating with national leadership while fostering a collaborative and efficient workplace culture. Mentorship plays a key role, with a focus on guiding team members through client interactions, project management, and execution to elevate the entire team’s performance. Additionally, the role encompasses enhancing office operations to improve outcomes and profitability by optimizing project performance, staffing, workload balance, and staff education.
Participation in internal initiatives is also expected, including contributions to national science and higher education practice teams, recurring internal meetings, and annual business development planning activities. This integrated approach ensures that the office aligns with firmer-wide strategic goals and continually improves its service offerings and operational effectiveness.
The position is well suited to candidates with at least 15 years of architectural industry experience, including a minimum of five years in project management and business development, specifically with science, technology, and higher education facilities. Proven success in managing multiple projects and clients concurrently, along with experience in office or studio leadership, is highly desirable. Academic credentials should include a bachelor's degree in architecture or a related field, with a master's degree and professional registration preferred. Sustainability accreditation is also beneficial.
Flad provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, paid holidays, and financial health and wellness benefits such as retirement savings plans, fiduciary advisory services, identity theft protection, and flexible benefits including mass transit and parking options. Employees also have access to income protection benefits including life insurance and disability coverage, an Employee Assistance Program, and ample opportunities for continuing education and career development through internal and external programs and professional membership support.
