Job Description
Friends of Children and Families (FOCAF) is a dedicated non-profit organization that serves the communities of Ada and Elmore Counties. FOCAF specializes in providing early childhood education and family engagement services tailored primarily for pre-school children and their families. As a mission-based organization, FOCAF is committed to empowering families and young children by fostering growth, learning, and well-being through its range of supportive programs and services. The organization places great emphasis on positively impacting the lives of children and families in the community through compassionate, evidence-based approaches and collaboration. FOCAF offers a professional, nurturing work environment where employees are encouraged to contribute to the mission of enhancing educational and health outcomes for children and families.
The Head Start Cook position at Friends of Children and Families is a vital role responsible for preparing nutritious and balanced meals for young participants enrolled in the FOCAF Head Start program. This role involves strict adherence to meal preparation guidelines and health regulations set forth by Head Start, the District Health Department, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Working up to 40 hours per week, this full-time role offers competitive hourly pay ranging from $18.00 to $19.50, providing financial stability alongside meaningful work. The Head Start Cook ensures that all meals meet nutritional standards to support the healthy growth and development of children while accommodating special dietary needs and allergy considerations.
In addition to meal preparation, the Head Start Cook is responsible for maintaining sanitary conditions in the kitchen and food handling areas, accurate meal counts, and maintaining up-to-date dietary documentation. Working closely with the Health and Safety Manager, the Cook also modifies menus as supply availability changes and ensures compliance with all health and safety regulations. This role demands excellent organizational and critical thinking skills to maintain smooth kitchen operations and foster a safe environment. Teamwork is a key component, as the Cook partners with the Cook's Assistant and other center staff to provide nutrition information and support for children, families, and staff.
As part of the job, the Head Start Cook will manage kitchen staff activities, regularly update reports on meal counts and dietary records, and ensure the cleanliness of kitchen facilities. This includes safe transportation of food and supplies to and from FOCAF centers and programs when needed. Commitment to professional development is valued, with opportunities and encouragement for participation in relevant training. Employees in this role are expected to follow FOCAF's policies, Head Start Performance Standards, and regulatory guidelines diligently, contributing to a safe and effective work environment.
FOCAF provides a comprehensive benefits package that enhances work-life balance and employee well-being. Benefits include low-cost medical and vision insurance, free dental coverage, short-term disability, employee assistance programs, and life insurance. The organization also offers matching contributions to a 401K retirement plan after one year of employment, along with paid sick, personal, and bereavement leave, and generous paid time off. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, FOCAF qualifies as an employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, providing additional financial benefits to eligible employees. This rewarding role offers the chance to impact the lives of children and families positively while building a meaningful career in early childhood nutrition and care.
