Job Description

The Crew Chief position at Van Andel Arena is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing the technical crew during events from load-in to load-out. This role serves as the primary point of contact for clients, vendors, and in-house building staff to ensure the seamless execution of events. The Crew Chief’s duties include managing and directing the efforts of other IATSE House Heads and on-call union employees, coordinating with technical service providers, and maintaining effective communication with all stakeholders. Additionally, this role involves completing and submitting detailed steward reports related to employee hours and wages, contributing to the ASM safety committee, and ensuring strict adherence to attendance policies. The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and customer service skills, a strong understanding of sound, lighting, and audiovisual equipment, and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. This is a physically demanding job that often requires working nights and weekends, and the ability to lift up to 75 pounds and stand for extended periods is essential. Employment terms, including wages and working conditions, are governed by a collective bargaining agreement with I.A.T.S.E. Local 26. The position offers the opportunity to be part of a dynamic team dedicated to delivering outstanding event experiences in one of Michigan’s most vibrant entertainment hubs.

Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • relevant experience in event production or technical crew leadership
  • union membership or eligibility to join I.A.T.S.E. Local 26
  • ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends
  • strong interpersonal skills for client and vendor interaction
  • physical ability to lift up to 75 pounds and stand for extended periods
  • proficiency with Microsoft Office and e-mail communication

Job Duties

  • Planning, coordination, and direction of all other IATSE House Heads and on-call IATSE employees
  • complete and maintain accurate steward reports of employee hours and wages
  • maintain a strong working relationship with the primary A/V vendors utilizing the facility
  • serve as a representative to the ASM safety committee
  • provide accurate event, incident, and safety reports to event coordinators and Union office
  • work with Event Coordinators, clients, and vendors to plan and execute events at Van Andel Arena
  • adhere to ASM attendance policies and procedures
