Established in 1909, ABM has built a reputation for delivering exceptional services that enhance the spaces and places essential to everyday life. With a vast portfolio that includes janitorial, engineering, parking, electrical and lighting, energy management, HVAC, landscaping, and critical mission solutions, ABM serves a diverse range of industries such as commercial office buildings, universities, airports, hospitals, data centers, manufacturing plants, distribution centers, and entertainment venues. Operating from more than 350 offices across the United States, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, and other international locations, ABM employs over 100,000 team members and generates an annual revenue nearing $8 billion.
The company is known for its strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, maintaining an equal opportunity workplace that supports employees regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. ABM participates in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security E-Verify program to confirm employment eligibility and is recognized as a military-friendly employer with dedicated programs to support veterans seeking career transition opportunities.
The School Custodian role at ABM is an entry-level position designed for individuals ready to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards across K-12 schools, colleges, or university campus environments. This position is ideal for someone entering or re-entering the workforce with limited experience or formal education, as on-the-job training is provided. Custodians play a crucial role in fostering a safe, sanitary, and pleasant atmosphere conducive to learning and community well-being.
Responsibilities of the School Custodian include cleaning and maintaining designated areas such as classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, hallways, and stairways with utmost attention to detail. Duties involve sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, removing debris, cleaning spills, emptying trash receptacles, and handling recycling processes properly. Custodians are also tasked with polishing hard surfaces such as woodwork and stainless steel, cleaning interior glass and mirrors, and ensuring restrooms are regularly cleaned and sanitized.
The role requires adherence to established safety guidelines and proper use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to protect building systems and surfaces. Custodians must be vigilant to identify and report any repair needs to supervisors or lead cleaners promptly. Besides cleaning, custodians may perform incidental outdoor tasks, including raking leaves, sweeping walkways, cutting grass, or snow removal, depending on the season.
This position requires effective communication skills to engage with clients, coworkers, and supervisors and foster positive working relationships within the team. ABM offers a comprehensive benefits package for its custodial employees, supporting their health, well-being, and professional growth. The company values individuals from diverse backgrounds, including veterans and those with military occupational specialties relevant to custodial work.
Working as a School Custodian at ABM offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the educational environment, ensuring safety and cleanliness for students, faculty, and staff. The role provides stability, career development potential, and the chance to be part of a reputable, mission-driven organization that emphasizes quality service and employee support. ABM’s commitment to accommodating individuals with disabilities and providing reasonable accommodations ensures an inclusive workplace where all employees can thrive.
