Job Description
History Colorado is a leading state agency and nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Colorado. With a deep love for the state and a strong belief in the transformative power of history, History Colorado operates as a people-centered, history-driven movement aimed at building a better future by connecting communities with their past. Serving all Coloradans, the organization manages access to Colorado’s history through immersive and engaging experiences at eleven museums and historic sites scattered across the state. These venues feature dynamic exhibits, educational activities, and unique programs designed to involve learners of all ages—from school groups on field trips to families and adult learners attending lectures and events. The institution also houses a free public research center, Colorado’s Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP), and administers the Colorado State Historical Fund (SHF), which stands as the largest preservation program of its kind in the nation. History Colorado safeguards an extensive collection of 15 million objects, photographs, and archival materials, offering crucial historical resources that support diverse learning opportunities and deepen the public’s connection to history.
Beyond its role as a custodian of the past, History Colorado strives to create an inclusive and welcoming space for all members of Colorado’s diverse communities. The institution commits itself to principles of community engagement, education, and accessibility to ensure that more voices, perspectives, and experiences contribute to the collective narrative of the state. Its vision is centered around the belief that every Coloradan should feel rooted in their heritage, empowered by the stories of those who came before, and affirmed in their belonging to this shared place. Guided by foundational virtues such as being in community, amplifying voices of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), co-creation, humility, flexibility, and shared destiny, History Colorado operates with a firm commitment to equity and social justice.
The Guest Services Agent (GSA) role at History Colorado is a vital front-facing position that plays a critical role in shaping the visitor experience. GSAs work at various stations including the admission desk and throughout multiple public spaces and exhibit galleries. Collaborating closely with different museum departments—such as Gift Shop Management, Exhibits Technicians, Security, Education, Group Sales, Membership, and Guest Services Management—GSAs ensure that the museum environment is welcoming, safe, and informative for all visitors and staff. This position requires a flexible schedule that may include working weekends, evenings, early mornings, and holidays, reflecting the varied hours of museum programs and events.
Key responsibilities of the Guest Services Agent include selling admission and membership tickets, handling cash transactions, and providing knowledgeable customer service about museum programs, exhibits, lectures, and events. Additionally, GSAs ensure that exhibits are properly prepared for public viewing, maintain cleanliness and safety standards in public areas, support education programming, and assist in the coordination of museum activities. The role also involves physical tasks such as moving exhibit installations and managing stock for disposable gallery items. Guest Services Agents act as floor wardens and assist security during emergencies, reflecting the position’s critical role in visitor safety. Candidates must demonstrate strong customer service skills, the ability to handle high-pressure situations calmly, and effective communication abilities. Experience in guest relations or similar fields, along with proficiency in related technological tools and volunteer coordination, is preferred.
Historically, History Colorado offers competitive benefits including comprehensive retirement plans, medical and dental insurance, life insurance options, disability coverage, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employee wellness programs, and flexible scheduling options. The organization values diversity and inclusion in its workforce and encourages applicants from historically underrepresented communities to apply. Commitments to anti-racism and equitable practices are core to the institution's mission and workplace culture. This is a unique opportunity to join a vibrant cultural institution dedicated to enriching lives through history while fostering a sense of community and belonging throughout Colorado.
