Job Description

This job opening is for a Grounds Maintenance B position within the Facilities Management department at a college located in Los Angeles. The establishment focuses on providing a well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing environment for its students, staff, and visitors. With a commitment to high standards, the college values the importance of sports fields, landscape, and grounds maintenance in ensuring safety, functionality, and beauty throughout its campus. The Facilities Management department plays a crucial role in supporting the college's mission by maintaining clean, safe, and sustainable outdoor environments that foster positive experiences and encourage outdoor activities. This position is a full-time, non-exempt role with a regular work schedule of 40 hours per week and an indefinite employment duration. The job is represented by the Teamsters, emphasizing collective bargaining rights and employee representation.

The Grounds Maintenance B role performs tasks of moderate complexity and some difficulty under the supervision of the Grounds Manager. Candidates will be responsible for supporting the maintenance and enhancement of sports fields and grounds using a variety of hand tools and power equipment. The position requires an individual capable of working both independently and as part of a crew to ensure the grounds meet the college's quality and safety standards. Key responsibilities include digging, raking, mowing, trimming, edging, watering, weeding, planting, mulching, tree pruning, turf and sod installation, as well as trash collection and power-washing surfaces. Additionally, this role involves operating larger grounds equipment such as forklifts, gang mowers, and lawn sweepers, which requires attention to safety and equipment handling protocols.

Effective communication skills and attention to detail are essential for the role, as employees are expected to receive specific directions from supervisors, track their labor and materials, and maintain quality standards throughout their work. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to producing quality work and show adaptability in high-volume, high-accountability environments with changing priorities. The position calls for individuals who are self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously. The role also includes opportunities to provide leadership and training to others while collaborating across various disciplines and functions.

In terms of qualifications, the ideal candidate will have at least a high school diploma or GED, along with three years of progressively responsible experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance. Proficiency in Google/Microsoft Office applications is also required to handle reporting and communication responsibilities effectively. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of drought-tolerant plant materials and experience in plant pruning, fertilizing, and mulching. The college promotes justice, equity, inclusion, and diversity as part of its core values, expecting candidates to embody these principles in their daily work. Compensation starts at $23.75 per hour with incremental increases after 6 and 12 months, accompanied by a generous benefits package that supports employees' well-being and professional development.
