Job Description

The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA) is a prominent organization dedicated to fostering strong connections between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and its alumni, supporters, and the broader community. As the amalgamation of the University of Wisconsin Foundation and the Wisconsin Alumni Association, WFAA plays a vital role in promoting the university's mission through fundraising, alumni engagement, and community-building initiatives. Its commitment to supporting educational excellence and enriching the Badger experience makes it a cornerstone institution within the UW-Madison ecosystem. The organization operates with a focus on inclusivity, innovation, and tradition, helping maintain UW-Madison's reputation as one of the most scenic and dynamic campuses in the country.

Join the Fun This Summer as a Grandparents University Counselor! The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association invites enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to become part of a treasured summer tradition at UW-Madison by applying to be a Grandparents University (GPU) Counselor. Starting June 16th, up to 30 motivated counselors will join the team to ensure a memorable experience for program participants. This exciting role offers an hourly wage of $16 and is perfect for anyone passionate about working with people, enjoys active environments, and is keen to spend their summer outdoors on the beautiful UW-Madison campus.

As a GPU Counselor, you will be the face and ambassador of both WFAA and UW-Madison. Your primary responsibility will be to guide grandparents and their grandchildren through the campus while assisting instructors and participants throughout the program duration. From leading groups to various campus locations, assisting with participant check-in, all the way to capturing memorable moments on camera, GPU Counselors play a vital role in creating an engaging and fun atmosphere during the summer sessions. Not only will you facilitate smooth program operations, but you will also be involved in event planning, customer service, youth programming, and hospitality.

The program itself is an award-winning initiative that began in 2001, designed to provide grandparents and grandchildren a unique Badger experience. Participants stay in campus residence halls, attend classes, engage in hands-on activities, and even earn a GPU varsity letter. By joining this team, you become part of a program that has been delighting families for over two decades, offering you unique experience and enriching opportunities.

The position requires active engagement throughout the program, involving approximately 70 hours over the summer from June to July 2026, with potential for additional hours. GPU Counselors will also participate in mandatory training sessions, including a counselor training day and instructor meetings, to prepare for a successful program run.

Working conditions are dynamic and physically active, requiring the counselor to be on their feet often with substantial walking, moving, and possibly lifting up to 20 pounds. This hands-on experience will enhance your skills in coordination, multitasking, and customer service in a vibrant university setting.

This role offers more than just a summer job. You receive free GPU swag, including a program T-shirt, water bottle, and cinch sack, enhancing the sense of community and pride among counselors. You will work in an engaging environment at one of the most picturesque university campuses in the United States. Additionally, this opportunity builds valuable skills in event planning, programming, hospitality, and customer service, which are highly transferable across multiple career fields.

Embrace this rewarding role as a Grandparents University Counselor and make a meaningful impact by helping create joyful memories for multi-generational families while gaining practical experience with a respected university foundation. You will leave the summer with professional skills, lasting friendships, and a connection to UW-Madison that extends beyond the program duration.
