The role of GPS Technician at Granite Construction is crucial in supporting field operations through precise surveying and layout tasks essential for project success. This position involves the use of advanced GPS and surveying technologies such as machine controls, total stations, and drones to ensure the accuracy of construction layouts, elevations, and grading. As a GPS Technician, you will be responsible for configuring GPS base stations and rovers, operating and troubleshooting equipment, and performing grade checking to confirm that all work aligns with project plans. The role demands interpreting blueprints and site plans, verifying control points and offsets, and communicating critical grade and layout information to equipment operators and field crews to ensure quality and efficiency throughout the earthwork, paving, and utility installation processes.

This position requires a hands-on approach with daily record-keeping, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work in dynamic and sometimes challenging outdoor environments. The GPS Technician must be physically capable of wearing safety equipment, working at heights, and navigating uneven terrain while maintaining safety standards in a construction setting involving heavy machinery. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • minimum 2 years of relevant experience in GPS surveying or machine control
  • proficiency with Trimble, Topcon, or similar GPS equipment
  • optional Drone License Part 107
  • knowledge of Civil 3D design software
  • physical capability to work at heights with safety harness
  • willingness to work various shifts including nights and extended hours
  • ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • safety awareness in construction environments with heavy machinery
  • strong communication and teamwork skills
  • physical fitness to perform manual tasks and work in confined spaces

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • 2 years of experience in grade checking, surveying, or GPS machine control, total stations and/or tablet data collector
  • experience working with Trimble GPS, Topcon, or similar equipment
  • drone license Part 107 preferred
  • experience utilizing Civil 3D design software to complete project needs
  • ability to wear a full body harness and work at heights while tied off
  • ability to work day, swing, and night shifts occasionally extended hours
  • ability to work in all weather conditions
  • ability to work safely in construction settings with exposure to moving machinery and heavy equipment
  • ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and complex environment
  • physical ability to squat, crawl, and work in awkward positions or confined spaces

Job Duties

  • Configure GPS base stations, rovers and automated machine controls on heavy earthmoving and paving equipment
  • perform grade checking to verify elevations, slopes, and alignment according to project plans
  • operate, maintain and troubleshoot GPS equipment, total stations, and laser levels
  • interpret blueprints, site plans, and staking information
  • set and verify control points, hubs, and offsets
  • communicate grade and layout information clearly to operators and field crews
  • monitor and ensure accuracy during earthwork, paving, and utility installation
  • maintain daily records of measurements and site activities
  • other duties as required
