Job Description
Shawnee County, located in Kansas, proudly manages a variety of recreational and community services to enrich the lives of its residents and visitors. Among its well-maintained facilities are several golf courses that serve as key recreational hubs for golf enthusiasts in the region. Shawnee County is dedicated to providing exceptional management and operation of its golf facilities to ensure a welcoming, efficient, and enjoyable environment for all golf patrons. These golf courses are more than just sporting venues; they are vibrant community centers offering leagues, tournaments, and social events, all managed with a commitment to quality service and professionalism.
The Golf Clubhouse Manager position within Shawnee County is a vital supervisory role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the golf course and clubhouse. This position plays a crucial part in maintaining the efficiency, organization, and customer satisfaction of the golf facility. Reporting to the Golf Operations General Manager, the Golf Clubhouse Manager ensures that every aspect of the clubhouse business—from golf shop operations and reservations to food and beverage service—is seamlessly coordinated. This role demands a balance of leadership, customer service expertise, and operational knowledge to create a top-tier golfing experience.
Working under general supervision, the Golf Clubhouse Manager handles multiple responsibilities that range from managing staff schedules and performance to supervising financial transactions such as fees collection and inventory management. The manager ensures that the golf shop and snack bar areas are properly stocked and maintained. A significant part of the role involves direct customer interaction, providing expertise in golf fundamentals, organizing golf leagues and tournaments, and handling inquiries about equipment and golf rules.
Operational duties consume about 35% of the manager's time, involving the oversight of the reservation system, starting times, and monitoring of play to ensure smooth course flow. Another 25% of the position is dedicated to staff supervision, including hiring, training, scheduling, and enforcing discipline as necessary. The manager also undertakes 25% of their role focusing on customer service, addressing public comments and concerns, liaising with vendors, and planning public relations activities aimed at golfer development. The remaining 15% is devoted to budgeting tasks, where the manager collaborates with the Golf Operations General Manager to prepare and monitor the facility’s budget, oversee purchasing decisions, and ensure fiscal responsibility.
This role requires a deep knowledge of human resource management practices, golf industry fundamentals, and business operations specific to golf courses. The ideal candidate is skilled in leadership, prioritization, and problem-solving, bringing a positive, customer-focused attitude to the managerial duties. They must be proficient in computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel, and capable of effective oral and written communication. This position also involves operating equipment such as cash registers, computers, golf carts, and telecommunication devices.
Applicants for the Golf Clubhouse Manager position should have a minimum of three years’ experience in golf course management, operations, maintenance, or club house work, along with at least one year of supervisory experience. Additional qualifications include a valid driver’s license and compliance with driving record requirements. Preferred candidates may hold a Class A Professional Golfers Association (PGA) or Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) membership card, though this is not mandatory. Special requirements include passing a pre-employment physical and drug screen and the ability to work evenings and weekends while lifting up to 20 pounds. The role also requires maintaining food handler’s and cereal malt beverage licenses.
Shawnee County values professionalism, leadership, and community engagement in its Golf Clubhouse Manager, and this position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity to contribute to the quality and success of the county’s golf assets. This job does not constitute a contract and duties may evolve to meet operational needs.
