Job Description

Target Corporation is a leading retail giant known for offering a wide range of products from general merchandise to food in well-organized and welcoming store environments. Founded over a century ago, Target has grown into one of the most recognized and beloved retail brands in the United States, renowned for its commitment to delivering an exceptional guest experience, exciting product selections, and competitive pricing. The company places a strong emphasis on its values, culture, and the meaningful experiences it provides not only to its guests but also to its team members across the country. Working at Target means being part of a team that is passionate about helping families discover the joy of everyday life by providing excellent service and convenience within their communities.

The General Merchandise Expert role at Target is a dynamic and vital position within the retail store environment. This role involves being an expert on store processes and efficiency, ensuring that all general merchandise areas are set, fully stocked, accurately priced, and correctly signed. These experts lead various in-store operations such as inbound and outbound shipments, replenishment tasks, and promotional signing processes to ensure the store’s merchandise looks appealing and is available for guests at all times. Working as a General Merchandise Expert means being actively involved in inventory management, supporting pick, pack, and ship fulfillment, and maintaining overall store aesthetics and merchandising standards.

This hourly role offers a competitive starting pay of $18.00 USD per hour with a pay range up to $27.00 USD per hour depending on experience and performance. It features a flexible work schedule that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and other peak shopping periods, accommodating a variety of personal and professional lifestyles. Target emphasizes training and development for this role, providing team members with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed and grow in their careers within the company.

A typical day for a General Merchandise Expert involves a variety of tasks designed to support business priorities and deliver a top-tier shopping experience. Team members greet guests and engage with them warmly to assist with their needs, creating a welcoming environment throughout the store. They are responsible for executing daily operational tasks such as receiving products, restocking shelves, organizing backrooms, arranging merchandise displays, and putting up promotional signage. Certified experts may also operate power equipment to move merchandise or store fixtures safely. The role requires attention to detail in pricing changes, merchandise set-up, and maintaining inventory accuracy, all while supporting compliance with safety and ethical standards.

Beyond operational responsibilities, General Merchandise Experts learn how their actions impact broader store goals like inventory management and profitability. They become knowledgeable about the store’s resources, products, and services to solve guest issues effectively and contribute to a positive shopping experience. Safety is paramount, and incumbents are expected to maintain a safe working environment, report hazards, and follow all safety protocols.

The role also offers opportunities to support additional aspects of guest service, including backup cashier duties and involvement in digital fulfillment processes such as picking and packing orders or managing guest pickup services while adhering to federal, state, and local regulations. The position requires a strong work ethic, flexibility, effective communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, physically demanding retail environment.

Target is an inclusive employer committed to equal opportunities and reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities. The company provides an inclusive and supportive workplace culture, competitive benefits packages, and numerous professional development opportunities, making it an excellent choice for individuals looking to build a fulfilling retail career.
