Job Description

The General Store Cashier / Stocker role is an essential position within a retail environment dedicated to providing exceptional customer service and maintaining an organized, efficient store. This position reports directly to the General Manager, ensuring day-to-day operations run smoothly and customers are greeted warmly upon entry. The establishment operates as a general store, offering a variety of merchandise with an emphasis on delivering a memorable shopping experience often connected to the local culture, specifically known as the Memphis experience. The role requires a dynamic individual who is attentive, organized, and customer-focused to support the store's operational needs while enhancing customer satisfaction and promoting sales.

As a General Store Cashier / Stocker, you will be responsible for a diverse set of tasks that blend cash handling, stock management, customer interaction, and visual merchandising. Your duties will include greeting customers and providing them with helpful information about products and pricing, ensuring that the pricing across merchandise is accurate and clearly displayed using price stickers. You will operate the cash register or POS system to process transactions quickly and accurately, calculate total purchases, handle payments, and prepare deposits at the end of shifts. Additionally, you will assist in creating attractive window and counter displays under the guidance of the General Manager to help boost store appeal and enhance the customer shopping experience.

Beyond cashiering duties, this position involves managing stock rooms with care, ensuring inventory is neatly organized, clean, and regularly checked against invoices during deliveries. You will play an active role in inventory control by participating in monthly or quarterly stock counts and monitoring incoming and outgoing merchandise to prevent discrepancies. Your responsibilities also extend to maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in checkout areas and throughout the store, which supports a professional and pleasant shopping atmosphere.

This role requires excellent interpersonal and organizational skills to flourish in a busy retail environment. Ability to remain calm under pressure, prioritize multiple tasks efficiently, and interact professionally with customers and team members is crucial. An attentive and detail-oriented attitude will help you identify and resolve issues promptly, contribute to smooth business operations, and deliver outstanding customer service. Knowledge of the local sister venues such as Blues City Cafe and Club 152 on Beale is an added advantage, allowing you to promote these locations effectively to customers and enhance their overall experience.

Working varied shifts, including weekends and holidays, flexibility is necessary to meet the needs of the business. Physical stamina is also important as the role involves standing for prolonged periods, walking extended distances, carrying merchandise up to 50 lbs occasionally, and frequent bending or kneeling. This position not only demands business acumen and technical skills but also a naturally calm and focused demeanor to handle the fast-paced and sometimes stressful retail environment successfully. Job Duties

  • When receiving incoming merchandise, check inventory to invoice and confirm shipment
  • Handle cash and credit transactions in an honest and professional manner
  • Controlling and checking outgoing merchandise
  • Wrapping or bagging products
  • Receiving payments and reconciling them with total sales
  • Preparing deposits, closing the till and putting back the float
  • Maintaining clean and orderly checkout areas, stock rooms, and general store area
  • Attention to detail
