Job Description

Petco is a leading pet specialty retailer dedicated to enriching the lives of pets and pet parents alike. Operating for over 60 years, Petco has established itself as the go-to destination where pets find everything they need to live their best lives—from nutritious meals and engaging toys to trusted supplies and expert care from individuals who genuinely understand the bond between people and their pets. With a strong community footprint, Petco operates more than 1,500 stores in the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico, alongside over 250 Vetco Total Care hospitals and numerous preventive care clinics. The company also runs eight distribution centers and has a recorded history of supporting animal welfare through its nonprofit, Petco Love, which has facilitated the adoption of approximately 7 million animals nationwide.

Joining Petco means becoming part of a vibrant community where pets come first. The company’s core values emphasize a pet-first approach, fostering fun and building strong community connections, while promoting ownership and commitment among its employees. These values create a work environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and focused on the wellbeing of employees and the pets they serve.

The role of General Manager at Petco is a pivotal leadership position responsible for overseeing a high-performing Pet Care Center. In this full-time role, the General Manager leads a team that is passionate about pets and driven to deliver excellent customer experiences while achieving business results. The position carries full ownership of the business operations within the Pet Care Center and requires a strong commitment to people management, performance excellence, and process adherence. The General Manager acts as a role model in leadership, fostering a culture of empowerment, collaboration, and continuous growth.

Key responsibilities include championing animal health, safety, and humane care standards, ensuring the Petco brand is represented positively in every aspect of the store environment, and creating welcoming spaces for both pets and pet parents. The General Manager is expected to build and nurture a diverse, engaged team, provide ongoing coaching and development, and create a fun, meaningful workplace. Business acumen is essential to managing sales, profitability, and operational metrics, including labor, payroll, merchandising, inventory control, and loss prevention. Additionally, the role involves community engagement through events, local partnerships, and adoption initiatives that strengthen Petco’s impact beyond the retail presence.

This leadership role requires significant in-store presence, with the General Manager actively engaging with team members, customers, and pets on the sales floor. The physical demands of the job include frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, along with managing exposure to animals and related environmental factors. Flexibility is necessary for working evenings, weekends, and holidays, as well as occasional travel for training and community outreach.

Petco offers a purposeful career path with opportunities for professional growth, development programs, and a company culture that values authenticity, inclusion, and teamwork. Working at Petco means making a tangible difference in the lives of pets and pet people every day, fostering long-term relationships and community impact in a brand-defining environment.
