The General Manager role at Petco is a full-time, in-store leadership position based at 1262 Rt 22 East, North Plainfield, NJ 07060. This role is pivotal in driving the success of a Pet Care Center by delivering outstanding service, ensuring high standards of animal care, and leading a motivated, diverse team. As a General Manager, you are the driving force behind your store's business performance, people development, and operational excellence. You will take ownership of your Pet Care Center’s success and act as a role model of leadership, embodying Petco’s mission and values.
In this role, you will champion the health and safety of all animals in your care, ensuring that Petco’s standards and policies regarding humane treatment are consistently adhered to. You will create an environment that welcomes pets and pet parents alike, fostering trust and satisfaction through integrity, transparency, and a steadfast commitment to doing what is right. Operationally, you will manage all facets of the store’s performance including sales growth, profitability, labor management, payroll, and inventory controls to maximize productivity and efficiency. Execution of merchandising standards, store appearance, and loss prevention are critical components of your responsibilities. Beyond the store operations, you will represent Petco in the local community by leading adoption initiatives, events, and partnerships that strengthen the company’s social impact.
The General Manager role involves regular interaction with customers, partners, and pets on the sales floor, making presence and engagement essential. Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and the ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds. Additionally, flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is required to support store operating hours. Travel may occasionally be necessary for training, meetings, or community events.

Job Requirements
- 3+ years of management experience (retail leadership preferred)
- strong people leadership, coaching, and talent development skills
- solid business, financial, and operational acumen
- excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities
- a genuine passion for pets and customer service
- high school diploma or GED preferred
- completion of Petco leadership development programs may be required for internal candidates
