Job Description

Bicycle Transit Systems is a nationally recognized woman-owned business founded in 2014 that specializes in operating and managing bike share programs across the United States. With a dedicated customer service call center and a mission focused on connecting communities while protecting the planet, Bicycle Transit Systems takes pride in delivering safe, seamless, reliable, and memorable experiences for riders. Emphasizing work-life balance, Bicycle Transit Systems operates under a 32-hour workweek spread over four days, fostering a supportive and productive work environment. Madison BCycle, a branch of Bicycle Transit Systems, is actively seeking a General Manager to lead its bike share system based in Madison, WI. This full-time, exempt position reports directly to the Chief Business Officer and features a Monday through Thursday schedule from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, supporting a four-day workweek.

The General Manager will act as the local business leader responsible for overseeing system performance including ridership, revenue, customer experience, and operational reliability. This role demands a dynamic, entrepreneurial mindset with strong leadership abilities and results orientation. The successful candidate must be adept at balancing strategic thinking with day-to-day execution to ensure optimal team performance and meet growth targets. Key responsibilities include developing and implementing strategies that drive ridership growth, revenue enhancement, operational efficiency, and deeper community engagement. As an integral leader, the General Manager will develop clear, measurable local goals aligned with the broader company mission and collaborate closely with city officials, sponsors, and community partners to achieve these objectives.

The role requires a proactive leader who can anticipate challenges, identify risks, and implement effective solutions while maintaining alignment with central leadership directives. The General Manager will lead and develop the Madison BCycle team, ensuring accountability, empathy, and a shared commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. This individual must be comfortable navigating the complexities of a fast-paced, evolving work environment with limited resources and high local accountability. They will also be responsible for managing budgets, financial performance, and revenue growth through sponsorship and partnership development.

Additional duties include overseeing daily operational activities in collaboration with the Operations Manager, maintaining contract compliance, and ensuring an excellent customer experience. The General Manager will also serve as the face of Madison BCycle in the community, representing the program in stakeholder meetings and advocating for sustainable transportation initiatives. Analytical skills are essential for monitoring key performance metrics, producing regular reports for senior leadership, and driving continuous improvement across business functions. Job Requirements

  • College degree in business administration, transportation, urban planning, public administration, nonprofit management, or related field preferred
  • 8+ years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently in a leadership role
  • Prior experience managing a budget, including P&L responsibility
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing sales, sponsorship, partnership, business development, or revenue-growth initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Experience working with government, businesses, institutions, community organizations, and/or non-profits preferred
  • Strong computer aptitude
  • Good negotiation skills
  • Passion for bikes, sustainability, transportation, cities, or community impact a plus

Job Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently in a leadership role, proactively identify priorities, solve problems, and drive initiatives forward with limited day-to-day direction
  • Prior experience managing a budget, including P&L responsibility, analyzing financial and operational data, and developing action plans to improve business performance
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing sales, sponsorship, partnership, business development, or revenue-growth initiatives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation skills and the ability to provide clear executive-level updates
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to manage complex work, stakeholder follow-up, reporting, and cross-functional execution
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and history of successfully developing and retaining key employees
  • Experience working with government, businesses, institutions, community organizations, and/or non-profits is strongly preferred
  • Strong computer aptitude, including high proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications and prior experience using project management software
  • Good negotiation skills and ability to build mutually beneficial relationships with partners and stakeholders
  • Passion for bikes, sustainability, transportation, cities, or community impact a plus

Job Duties

  • Serve as the local business leader for Madison BCycle, taking ownership of system performance across ridership, revenue, customer experience, operational reliability, team effectiveness, community impact, and financial results
  • Lead the development, execution, and ongoing refinement of Madison BCycle goals and strategies in alignment with Bicycle Transit Systems broader company priorities
  • Work closely with the Madison BCycle Operations Manager to ensure operational integrity of the system, including bike availability, station performance, maintenance quality, field productivity, safety, and customer experience
  • Build and maintain a strong local team culture aligned with company mission, vision, values, and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
  • Own local financial performance in partnership with Finance and Central leadership, including budget management, revenue performance, expense control, and progress toward system sustainability
  • Grow the business by building and maintaining productive relationships with municipal stakeholders, program sponsors, employers, institutions, riders, community partners, and other local partners
  • Communicate proactively, clearly, and professionally with Central leadership, local staff, municipal partners, sponsors, community stakeholders, and customers
