Job Description

Petco is a leading pet specialty retailer that has proudly served pet parents and their beloved pets for over 60 years. With more than 1,500 Petco stores across the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, Petco is "where the pets go" for everything they need to live their best lives. From nutritious meals and engaging toys to trusted supplies and expert support, Petco is deeply committed to fostering the pet-human bond through outstanding service and innovative products. Beyond retail, Petco operates over 250 Vetco Total Care hospitals, multiple preventive care clinics, and distribution centers nationwide. The company has also made a significant impact in animal welfare by founding Petco Love in 1999, which supports thousands of local animal welfare organizations and has facilitated the adoption of approximately 7 million animals through in-store events.

The role of General Manager at Petco is a vital leadership position responsible for operating a high-performing Pet Care Center that truly puts pets first. General Managers are the driving force behind delivering extraordinary care for animals, inspiring and developing team members, ensuring an outstanding customer experience, and achieving strong business results. In this position, you own the end-to-end operations of the Pet Care Center, which includes managing people, processes, and performance. You will lead with integrity and passion for pets and their owners, creating a welcoming environment that supports animal well-being and fosters community trust.

As a General Manager, you will champion the health, safety, and humane care of all animals, ensuring compliance with Petco’s high standards and policies. You will build an inclusive, energized team that embodies the Petco brand values and provides exceptional service to customers and their pets. Attracting, hiring, training, coaching, and developing talent will be central to your leadership approach, helping to cultivate a positive culture where employees feel engaged, supported, and empowered to grow. Additionally, you will be accountable for driving sales growth, profitability, and operational excellence through effective financial analysis, labor management, merchandising, inventory control, and operational procedures.

This full-time role requires a hands-on leader who is regularly present on the sales floor, engaging with partners, customers, and pets. The physical aspects of the job include standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Flexible availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays is necessary to align with Pet Care Center operating hours. The General Manager also represents Petco in the community by leading local events, fostering adoption initiatives, and forming partnerships that enhance the company’s impact on animal welfare.

Joining Petco means becoming part of a purpose-driven organization dedicated to improving the lives of pets and people. Petco is proud to offer growth opportunities through leadership development programs and diverse career pathways. The company fosters a culture that values authenticity, inclusion, teamwork, and shared ownership, creating an environment where all employees can thrive. Petco is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity and fair employment practices. The hourly or salary range for this position is $36.00 to $59.50, varying by location, experience, and applicable wage laws. For more comprehensive information about Petco’s rewards, including health and financial benefits, 401K, incentives, and paid time off, prospective employees are encouraged to visit the Petco careers website.
