The General Manager role at Petco is a full-time leadership position central to bringing the company’s mission to life on the ground level. As the owner of a high-performing Pet Care Center, the General Manager is responsible for driving people, performance, and process excellence in a way that puts the health and well-being of pets and the satisfaction of pet parents at the forefront. This role requires a passionate and dedicated leader who can inspire a diverse team to deliver outstanding customer experiences, ensure the highest standards of animal care and safety, and drive profitable business results. In this multifaceted position, the General Manager champions pet health and safety, creates welcoming and supportive environments for pets and their families, and fosters a culture of fun and connection among team members. They are tasked with recruiting, training, coaching, and developing talent, building an inclusive and engaged workforce aligned with the Petco brand. Additionally, General Managers own business outcomes by managing sales growth, profitability, labor, payroll, expenses, merchandising, inventory, and operational processes according to Petco’s standards. They also represent Petco in the community by leading local events and adoption initiatives, further strengthening Petco’s impact beyond the store walls.
Candidates suited for this role will possess at least three years of management experience, ideally in retail, strong leadership and coaching skills, business and operational acumen, and a genuine passion for both pets and customer service. The position demands physical ability to engage actively on the sales floor and handle various operational tasks safely. Job Requirements
- 3+ years of management experience (retail leadership preferred)
- strong people leadership, coaching, and talent development skills
- solid business, financial, and operational acumen
- excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities
- a genuine passion for pets and customer service
- high school diploma or GED preferred
- completion of Petco leadership development programs may be required for internal candidates
- ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds
- flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- able to work in close proximity to animals with exposure to dander, odors, noises, and cleaning chemicals
- willingness to travel occasionally for training, meetings, or community engagement
