Job Description

Petco Animal Supplies, Inc., commonly known as Petco, is a leading pet specialty retailer that has been proudly serving pet parents and their beloved companions for over 60 years. With more than 1,500 stores across the United States, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, along with 250+ Vetco Total Care hospitals and hundreds of preventive care clinics, Petco is a cornerstone in the pet care industry. The company is deeply committed to improving the lives of pets and their owners by providing high quality products, trusted expert advice, and exceptional services that enhance pet wellbeing. Petco’s mission is to nurture the pet-human bond and create an inclusive community for all pet lovers. As pioneers in animal welfare, Petco also founded Petco Love, a nonprofit that partners with thousands of local animal welfare groups and has helped find homes for approximately 7 million animals through in-store adoption events.

The role of General Manager at Petco is a pivotal leadership position designed for individuals who are passionate about pets and people. This role involves owning the business operations of a Pet Care Center, where you will lead a high-performing team, ensure the highest standards of animal care and customer service, and drive strong business results. As a General Manager, you are responsible for creating a safe and welcoming environment for both pets and pet parents, fostering a positive, inclusive culture, and operating the center efficiently with integrity and transparency. Your leadership directly impacts the health, safety, and happiness of the animals as well as the growth and engagement of your team.

At Petco, the General Manager acts as a role model, exhibiting exceptional leadership qualities by coaching, developing talent, managing finances, analyzing performance metrics, and executing merchandising and operational processes aligned with Petco’s brand and safety standards. The role requires hands-on involvement including regular presence on the sales floor to engage with partners, customers, and pets, emphasizing the importance of building relationships based on trust and care. Additionally, this role involves community engagement through leading adoption initiatives, local events, and partnerships that amplify Petco’s mission beyond the store walls.

This position is full-time and requires flexibility including working evenings, weekends, and holidays. The physical demands include standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in close proximity to animals and related environments. The General Manager’s efforts culminate in a thriving Pet Care Center characterized by loyal customers, a highly motivated team, profitable business operations, and a safe, healthy setting for pets to thrive.

Petco offers a dynamic, purpose-driven work environment that celebrates authenticity, inclusion, and teamwork, with opportunities for personal and professional growth through leadership development programs and career pathways. This role is well-suited for those who want to make a meaningful impact, embracing Petco’s values "Pet First," "Foster the Fun," and "Let’s Go!" while shaping the future of pet care retail.
