The role of General Manager II at HMSHost is a leadership position responsible for managing one or a small cluster of quick-service restaurants (QSRs) or points-of-sale with an annual sales volume typically up to $5 million. The General Manager is entrusted with overseeing all aspects of restaurant operations, encompassing staff management, financial control, and quality assurance, to drive profitability while maintaining high operational standards. Working under minimal supervision, the General Manager exercises broad judgment in decision-making to foster an engaged and motivated team culture. Key responsibilities include managing shift schedules, hiring and developing staff, ensuring cleanliness and operational readiness, and navigating supplier relationships to maintain inventory levels. The position requires a strong focus on employee engagement, adhering to company policies on diversity and inclusion, and championing health and safety standards in compliance with relevant regulations. The General Manager is also expected to leverage technology tools for operational reporting and efficiency, participate in audit processes, and creatively implement strategies to boost revenue. Job Requirements

  • Manage QSR, casual dine, full service or similar restaurant types with P&L responsibility
  • Minimum three years of restaurant P&L management experience
  • Five to seven years overall restaurant experience
  • Food service management or culinary education may substitute for some experience
  • Ability to lead, delegate and resolve issues effectively
  • Familiarity with HMSHost policies and standards or ability to learn
  • Strong reading, comprehension and communication skills
  • Knowledge and compliance with federal, state and local safety and health standards
  • Ability to stand and walk for up to 80 percent of work time
  • Comfortable using a computer and data entry
  • Adherence to company health, safety and CAL-OSHA regulations
  • Willingness to work varied and rotating schedules including openings and closings

Job Qualifications

  • Documented skills managing QSR, Casual Dine, Full Service or similar restaurants including P&L responsibility
  • Minimum three years restaurant P&L management experience
  • Five to seven years overall restaurant experience
  • Graduation from Food Service Management or Culinary program may substitute for some experience
  • Demonstrated team management, delegation and issue resolution skills
  • Knowledge of HMSHost policies, products, service, quality and operations or ability to learn quickly
  • Ability to speak, read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and policies
  • Ability to understand menus and brand standards
  • Strong communication skills to interact with individuals and customers
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state and local sanitary, safety and health standards including HACCP

Job Duties

  • Ensure all assistant managers and staff recognize the importance of closing the restaurant to prepare for opening, hold Shift Managers accountable for executing all closing and opening checklists and requirements
  • Understand, adopt, and consistently demonstrate defined manager behaviors to create an environment where employee engagement thrives
  • Deploy staff and resources to maximize profitability within the restaurant and accept P&L responsibility
  • Assign work tasks and activities, prepare schedules, and ensure that all shifts are covered
  • Provide restaurant staff with consistent support, coaching and encouragement to achieve business goals
  • Interview job candidates, make hiring, termination, advancement, promotion or status change decisions for associates
  • Promote HMSHost/Avolta as an employer of choice within the local community
  • Ensure company diversity and inclusion philosophy is actively executed
  • Manage onboarding and offboarding processes including compliance with badging, orientation, OJT and training procedures
  • Analyze financial and operational data to monitor progress toward unit goals and assign associates accordingly
  • Recognize staff contributions and performance
  • Accept and champion all Employee Engagement behaviors
  • Maintain current contact information for all associates
  • Ensure daily orders are prepared and stock levels maintained
  • Oversee receiving goods, invoice processing and vendor communications
  • Maintain proficiency in management information systems (MIV, Crunch Time, Kronos, etc.)
  • Monitor and maintain restaurant equipment and schedule necessary repairs
  • Participate in response to NSF and other audits
  • Minimize waste and participate in food donation programs
  • Assess skill levels of associates and coordinate training and education
  • Inspire employees to adopt new company technologies
  • Maintain knowledge of brand standards, CBAs, lease agreements and labor relations
  • Develop and implement creative revenue strategies
  • Manage day-to-day activities of associates within assigned restaurants or points-of-sale
  • Resolve customer and associate issues using judgment and discretion
  • Provide feedback reflecting progress against individual and business goals
  • Implement marketing programs and comply with promotional activities
  • Work varied and rotating schedules including opening, busy dayparts, and closing shifts
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety activities and CAL-OSHA regulations
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
