The role of General Manager I (GM) at HMSHost is a vital leadership position responsible for managing a quick-service restaurant (QSR) or a small cluster of restaurants with sales typically up to $5 million. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the restaurant is maintained to high standards of cleanliness, is well staffed, operationally efficient, and financially successful. The General Manager exercises broad discretion in leadership decisions, influencing the overall performance and guest satisfaction of the unit. This role is exempt under both the Administrative and Executive exemptions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, reflecting its level of responsibility and leadership requirements.

General Managers at HMSHost take full ownership of their restaurant's operational and financial success by overseeing staff deployment, training, and motivation to foster a positive and productive work environment. The role includes managing daily restaurant activities such as opening and closing procedures, inventory control, equipment maintenance, compliance with health and safety regulations, and ensuring exceptional standards of product availability and brand adherence. General Managers use management information systems to monitor progress towards goals and implement creative strategies to increase revenue and guest satisfaction.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining compliance with local, state, and federal laws regarding sanitation and occupational safety, conducting hiring and termination decisions, and promoting diversity and inclusiveness in hiring practices. The General Manager also acts as a coach and mentor to the management and restaurant team, providing feedback, motivation, and professional development opportunities. The position requires a flexible schedule covering a variety of shifts, including peak business hours, to ensure direct oversight of operations.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred but not mandatory
  • Minimum five years of restaurant management experience
  • Experience managing restaurants with sales up to $5 million
  • Proven P&L accountability and success over multiple annual cycles
  • Ability to work a varied and rotating schedule including opening and closing shifts
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills
  • Ability to maintain knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety standards
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Authorization to work in the United States

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of restaurant experience, including at least three years in restaurant P&L management
  • Graduation from a Food Service Management or Culinary program may substitute some experience
  • Demonstrated team management and delegation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Knowledge of HMSHost policies, products, service, quality, and operations standards
  • Strong communication skills including speaking, reading, and comprehension of instructions and policy documents
  • Ability to motivate and engage employees
  • Familiarity with management information systems such as MIV, Crunch Time, and Kronos
  • Previous experience with union and non-union restaurant environments preferred

Job Duties

  • Ensure all assistant managers and staff recognize the importance of closing the restaurant and prepare it for opening
  • Hold shift managers accountable for executing closing and opening checklists
  • Deploy staff and resources to maximize profitability and accept P&L responsibility
  • Assign work tasks, prepare schedules, and ensure shifts are covered
  • Provide coaching and encouragement to restaurant staff to achieve business goals
  • Interview job candidates and make hiring, termination, and advancement decisions
  • Promote company diversity and inclusion philosophy within the restaurant
  • Oversee on-boarding and off-boarding of associates including compliance with badging and training
  • Monitor and maintain product availability and restaurant inventory
  • Oversee receiving goods and processing invoices
  • Schedule routine equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Manage company response to audits and minimize waste
  • Conduct training and assess employee skills
  • Maintain knowledge of brand standards, labor relations, and company policies
  • Implement marketing and promotional programs
  • Manage day-to-day associate activities and resolve customer and associate issues
  • Maintain compliance with health, safety, and sanitation regulations
  • Train managers and associates on wellness protocols and health requirements
