Job Description
Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. is a leading pet specialty retailer that has been "where the pets go" for over 60 years, offering everything pets need to live their best lives. Headquartered with a position located at 3591 Washington Blvd, Halethorpe, MD, Petco has built a reputation for delivering quality pet products, expert support, and services that celebrate the universal truths of pet parenthood—from the joy of every tail wag to the challenges of late night zoomies. With a strong workforce of over 29,000 team members and a presence in more than 1,500 stores across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico, along with over 250 Vetco Total Care hospitals and multiple distribution centers, Petco prides itself on nurturing the pet-human bond in communities nationwide. The company also leads in animal welfare through Petco Love, supporting thousands of local animal groups and facilitating the adoption of nearly 7 million animals through in-store events.
The General Manager role at Petco is a full-time, on-site leadership position focused on leading a high-performing Pet Care Center. The role involves owning the store business by balancing leadership, operational excellence, and customer engagement to deliver both exceptional pet care and robust business results. This position demands a passionate, driven individual who thrives on coaching and building teams while maintaining the highest standards for animal health, safety, and customer satisfaction. The General Manager is responsible for creating an environment where both pets and their owners feel welcomed and supported, fostering an inclusive, energized team culture that reflects Petco's core values: Pet First, Foster the Fun, and Let’s Go. These values emphasize the protection and empowerment of pets, celebration of pet parenthood, and commitment to teamwork and authentic leadership.
As the leader, the General Manager acts as the owner of their business, responsible for sales growth, profitability, labor management, and operational compliance. They leverage Petco’s tools and insights to analyze store performance, identify areas for improvement, and execute strategies that drive business success. Additionally, the role includes community engagement through local events and adoption initiatives, reinforcing Petco's mission beyond the store walls. From maintaining store appearance and safety protocols to managing inventory and loss prevention, this role demands strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
The working environment is primarily indoors in a retail Pet Care Center. The job requires frequent interaction on the sales floor, involving standing, walking, occasional bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Flexibility in work hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is essential. The General Manager must be comfortable working in proximity to animals, experiencing exposure to animal dander, odors, noises, and cleaning chemicals. Some travel may be required for training, meetings, or community engagement.
This position offers a competitive salary range of $42,000 to $77,500 annually, reflecting location, experience, and applicable regulations. Petco also offers a comprehensive Total Rewards package featuring health insurance, financial benefits, 401K, incentives, and paid time off, contributing to a supportive workplace that values wellbeing and growth. Petco is an equal opportunity employer, welcoming applicants from diverse backgrounds, committed to creating an inclusive environment where every team member can thrive.
In summary, the General Manager at Petco is more than a retail manager—they are a leader with a passion for pets, a commitment to operational excellence, and the ability to inspire teams while driving business success. This role provides an exciting career path for individuals dedicated to making a positive impact in the pet care community, with opportunities for personal and professional growth within a dynamic and purpose-driven company.
