Job Description

Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. is a leading pet specialty retailer that has been proud to serve the pet community for over 60 years. Known as "where the pets go," Petco provides everything needed for pets to live their best lives, including favorite foods, toys, trusted supplies, and expert advice from passionate pet lovers. With more than 1,500 stores across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico, as well as over 250 Vetco Total Care hospitals and numerous preventive care clinics, Petco is a comprehensive resource for pet parents nationwide. The company also supports animal welfare through its nonprofit arm, Petco Love, facilitating adoption events and partnering with local groups to find homes for millions of animals. Petco stands as a vibrant community where pet parents and pet lovers converge, sharing in the joys and responsibilities of pet care, celebrating the unique moments that pet parenthood brings.

The General Manager role at Petco is pivotal in bringing the organization’s purpose and values to life. This full-time leadership position is based within a Pet Care Center retail environment where the General Manager is responsible for fostering a high-performing team and ensuring the delivery of exceptional care and service to pets and their parents. The General Manager acts as the business owner with full accountability for people, performance, and processes. This role demands a leader who combines a passion for pets and people with strong business acumen and operational expertise. The General Manager champions the health and safety of animals, ensures compliance with Petco’s standards, and creates a welcoming environment where customers and their pets feel supported and valued.

Key aspects of the role include managing sales growth, profitability, and operational excellence while leading an inclusive and empowered team. Responsibilities extend to hiring, training, coaching, and developing diverse talent and fostering a culture of engagement and fun. The General Manager is also expected to represent Petco in the community, leading events and adoption initiatives to strengthen the company’s local impact. Success in this role is measured by a safe, healthy environment where animals thrive, a motivated and loyal team, satisfied returning customers, and a profitable, well-managed Pet Care Center that exemplifies Petco’s core values.

The position requires a hands-on leader who regularly engages on the sales floor and takes pride in operational details including store appearance, safety, loss prevention, payroll, and inventory control. Physical demands include frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The role involves flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays with some travel for training or community activities. Petco affirms its commitment to diversity and equal opportunity, encouraging candidates from all backgrounds to apply. Working at Petco offers a purpose-driven career with opportunities for growth, authentic teamwork, and the chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of pets and their people.
