Job Description
Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. is a leading pet specialty retailer and services provider with a rich history spanning over 60 years. Known as "where the pets go," Petco has established itself as a trusted destination for pet parents seeking high-quality products and expert support to help their pets live their best lives. Petco operates more than 1,500 retail stores across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico, alongside over 250 Vetco Total Care hospitals and numerous preventive care clinics and distribution centers. The company’s commitment to animal welfare is also demonstrated through Petco Love, its charitable foundation founded in 1999, which supports thousands of local animal groups and has helped facilitate the adoption of approximately 7 million animals. Petco thrives on the passion for pets and the human-animal bond, fostering a unique culture that values authenticity, inclusion, teamwork, and purpose-driven work.
The General Manager role at Petco is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing the operations of a Pet Care Center. This role demands a strong passion for pets and people, as the General Manager is the owner of the business with full accountability for people, performance, process, and ensuring world-class animal care and customer experience. Reporting to the regional leadership, the General Manager leads a high-performing team to inspire partners, delight customers, and drive profitable growth. This is a full-time position with a salary range from $55,000 to $102,000 per year, subject to factors such as location, experience, and local wage laws.
In this role, the General Manager champions the health, safety, and humane care of all animals while creating an environment where pets and pet parents feel welcome and supported. The position requires building an inclusive, energized team that embodies the Petco brand and delivers exceptional customer service. The General Manager hires, trains, coaches, and develops talent across multiple functions, fostering a positive and collaborative culture of engagement and growth.
The business side of the role involves owning the Pet Care Center’s sales growth, profitability, and operational excellence. This includes analyzing financial and operational results, managing labor and expenses, executing merchandising and inventory activities consistent with brand and safety standards, and representing Petco in the local community through events and adoption initiatives. People leadership is also a core aspect, requiring development of leadership pipelines, performance management, coaching, accountability, and promoting a culture of teamwork and shared ownership.
Operational excellence is critical, with responsibilities such as ensuring safe opening and closing procedures, store cleanliness, loss prevention, and completing administrative and payroll tasks accurately. The General Manager must embody Petco’s core values: putting pets first, fostering fun and connection, and committing to ownership and team success. Success in this role is measured by a safe and thriving environment for pets, an engaged team, loyal customers, and a profitable store reflecting Petco’s values in action.
Candidates should have at least 3 years of management experience, preferably in retail, with strong leadership, coaching, business acumen, communication, problem-solving skills, and a genuine passion for pets and customer service. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, with possible requirements for completion of Petco’s leadership development programs especially for internal candidates. The job is demanding physically with tasks that require frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in proximity to animals and related environments.
Working at Petco offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful, purpose-driven work that makes a real difference in the lives of pets and their owners. Employees benefit from growth opportunities through development programs, a culture that values authenticity and inclusivity, and the chance to lead, own, and shape their business every day. Petco is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming candidates from all backgrounds.
