Job Description
Sonesta International Hotels is the eighth largest hotel company in the United States and continues to grow rapidly. This leading hospitality company offers an exceptional blend of full-service and focused hotels located in major cities, providing guests with unique and diverse lodging experiences. Sonesta's portfolio includes owned, managed, and franchised properties, establishing the brand as a familiar and trusted presence in over 1000 hotels across eight countries and counting. The company prides itself on delivering hospitality driven by the human touch, combining passion, purpose, and loyalty to create meaningful and memorable stays for every guest. Their core philosophy, "Together We Thrive," emphasizes quality, value, and outstanding service that connects with guests on a personal level.
The General Manager (GM) role at Sonesta International Hotels is a critical leadership position responsible for overseeing all hotel operations and serving as the primary representative for guests, associates, clients, and ownership. This role requires an individual who can drive business results by managing revenue, controlling costs, enhancing guest and employee satisfaction, and ensuring the highest standards of product and service quality. The General Manager works collaboratively with various support teams, including marketing, revenue management, sales, accounting, facilities, human resources, IT, and procurement services to achieve overall hotel success.
The GM is entrusted with implementing Sonesta's renowned service standards and fostering a culture of exceptional customer care among all hotel associates. They are tasked with maintaining optimum hotel conditions across food and beverage outlets, guest amenities, and physical maintenance. Working closely with sales and revenue management teams, the General Manager develops and executes sales and marketing strategies and seasonal demand approaches to maximize occupancy and revenue.
Key responsibilities include directing sales efforts alongside the Regional Sales Director and Global Sales Office, managing the hotel’s pricing strategy and reservation systems, establishing service recovery procedures, and ensuring compliance with brand standards such as the ES Suites positioning and Travel Pass guest recognition program. The General Manager also supervises hotel departments including front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, and maintenance through collaboration with department managers.
Financial leadership is a significant aspect of the GM role, involving the preparation and monitoring of capital and operational budgets, analysis of variances, and communication with ownership regarding financial performance. Additionally, the GM ensures all financial transactions are properly managed in partnership with accounting staff. Compliance with federal, state, and local laws relating to health, safety, and alcohol service is strictly enforced.
Moreover, the General Manager oversees human resources functions such as recruiting, onboarding, training, and performance management. They also maintain oversight of IT systems and procurement processes to guarantee smooth operation and cost efficiency. Acting as the "Manager on duty" at times, the GM supports guest satisfaction by personally engaging with guests and responding promptly to issues and complaints.
Sonesta’s commitment to employee well-being is reflected in its comprehensive benefits package, which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans with company match, paid time off, and employee discounts. The company fosters an inclusive and equal opportunity work environment where all qualified applicants receive consideration regardless of race, gender, or other protected characteristics. The General Manager position offers both a challenging and rewarding leadership opportunity within an expanding hospitality company dedicated to delivering outstanding guest experiences and operational excellence.
