Job Description
Shaner Hotel Group is an independent franchisee owner and operator of hotels, known for delivering high-quality hospitality services. Though affiliated with the Marriott brand, it operates separately from Marriott International, Inc., managing all aspects of employment policies including hiring, compensation, and benefits. The group is recognized as one of the foremost award-winning hospitality owner-operators and management companies in the industry, boasting a portfolio of over 65 properties across 14 states and four countries. These properties include full-service, select-service, extended-stay, and resort hotels. Shaner Hotels also provides comprehensive services such as hotel development, design and construction, e-commerce, and revenue management for investors, hotel owners, and hospitality brands.
This opportunity is based at the Courtyard by Marriott Newark-University of Delaware, a full-service hotel located on a beautiful suburban campus known for exceptional service and state-of-the-art technology. This hotel is recognized as one of Delaware's first "Green Lodging" establishments, showcasing its commitment to sustainability. The hotel is strategically located near major local businesses like WL Gore, Bank of America, Siemens, and adjacent to the Clayton Hall Conference Center, which offers over 40,000 square feet of meeting space. Guests and employees alike enjoy proximity to entertainment, shopping at Christiana Mall, Delaware Park, and cultural sites in the Brandywine Valley.
The role offered is for a General Manager with a unique blend of responsibilities that extend beyond traditional hotel management. This position combines executive leadership of the Courtyard by Marriott with a significant academic component. The General Manager will have full operational oversight for the hotel, ensuring revenue growth, operational excellence, guest satisfaction, and adherence to brand standards. Additionally, this role involves strategic asset management, sales strategy formulation, market positioning, and community engagement.
What sets this position apart is the partnership with a leading university's hospitality program, where the General Manager will serve as an Adjunct Professor. This includes mentoring, teaching, and inspiring future hospitality professionals through a hands-on practicum program embedded within the hotel operation. The role offers the opportunity to shape the next generation of hospitality leaders, integrating real-world hotel management experience with academic learning.
Candidates for this role should be seasoned General Managers or senior hotel executives with a minimum of seven years of progressive hotel leadership experience, ideally with Marriott brand exposure. Strong financial acumen, passion for talent development, and public speaking confidence are essential. Previous teaching or mentoring experience is highly valued, along with a master’s degree. The salary for this salaried position ranges from $120,000 to $135,000 per year and includes benefits.
This is more than just managing a hotel; it is about creating a lasting legacy, fostering innovation, community connections, and experiential learning in hospitality. Joining Shaner Hotels means becoming part of a forward-thinking, award-winning company that values growth, excellence, and education.
