The General Manager (GM) role at Ulta Beauty is a pivotal leadership position accountable for managing the overall operations of a single retail store, including its salon. The GM is expected to lead by example, championing Ulta’s core values while driving top-line sales growth and operational excellence. This full-time role offers a competitive salary range from $87,360 to $120,640 annually, with the potential for bonus compensation based on performance metrics. The General Manager’s responsibilities encompass performance management, people leadership, and process execution. From promoting a culture of accountability that meets or exceeds sales, guest loyalty, payroll, and shrinkage goals to leveraging financial and operational data for store success, the GM plays a critical role in meeting company targets. The GM must also stay current on industry trends to enhance guest experiences perform makeup applications, skincare analyses, and product demonstrations.

Leadership duties include attracting and retaining a diverse team, fostering an inclusive environment, and building a highly engaged workforce that reflects Ulta Beauty’s brand values. The GM oversees talent acquisition, training, coaching, and development of both managers and associates and ensures ongoing professional growth through continuous education in brand and category knowledge.

Operational excellence is also essential, with the GM ensuring adherence to company policies, scheduling efficiency, asset protection, inventory control, loss prevention, and workplace safety. The role demands the capacity to influence the adoption of new initiatives and technology and maintain regular communication with field leadership to optimize the store business strategy.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree (preferred) and 3-5+ years of fast-paced retail management experience, including financial management skills, operational leadership, and strong people management abilities. Proficiency with basic technology, excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills are vital. Flexibility in scheduling to include evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel for corporate meetings is required. This role is physically active, requiring mobility throughout the store, frequent bending, lifting, and coordination.

Job Requirements

  • Work a flexible, full-time schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Must be available to close the store at least once per week
  • Attend corporate meetings and conferences including overnight and interstate travel
  • Maintain valid identification for airline travel
  • Frequent use of computer and telephonic devices
  • Continuous mobility with frequent bending, pushing, reaching, twisting, lifting, carrying up to 25 lbs
  • Continuous walking and coordination
  • Able to comply with company policies and safety standards

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 3-5+ years of fast-paced retail management or relevant work experience
  • Success in financial management including driving sales and controlling expenses
  • Proven retail management skills in inventory monitoring, operational excellence, and merchandising execution
  • Experience leading, developing, and motivating teams
  • Proficient with Point of Sale systems, Microsoft Office, and Apple devices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong collaboration, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt, use good judgment, and perform under pressure

Job Duties

  • Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed retail and service sales goals, payroll, omni-channel, and retail shrink
  • Drive company profitability through operational excellence, top-line sales growth, and expense control
  • Leverage store forecast and payroll budgets to maximize productivity and achieve sales and payroll goals
  • Address issues identified by financial and operational reporting and store audits to achieve goals
  • Perform makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations to enhance guest experience and drive sales
  • Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team and address staffing needs
  • Lead manager and associate development including training, coaching, performance reviews, succession planning, and individual development plans
