Job Description

Community Work Services (CWS) is a well-established nonprofit organization based in Boston with a rich history spanning over 145 years. Dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities and those facing other barriers to employment, CWS provides vital workforce development, vocational training, and meaningful employment opportunities. Collaborating closely with businesses, government agencies, and community organizations, CWS strives to deliver high-quality services that create pathways to independence and economic self-sufficiency for its participants. The organization’s commitment to inclusivity and social impact positions it as a key player in enhancing community well-being and offering transformative opportunities to marginalized groups.

At CWS, the Facilities Management team holds a pivotal role in ensuring the organization’s physical sites remain safe, clean, and welcoming environments. These spaces are essential for employees, program participants, and community partners to thrive and engage effectively in their respective activities. Joining CWS means becoming part of a mission-driven organization where each employee's efforts directly influence the social fabric and support system of the local community.

The General Maintenance Technician within the Facilities Management department is a full-time, non-exempt role offering $22.00 per hour for a 40-hour workweek, with occasional evening or weekend hours as needed. This position is integral to maintaining the functionality and aesthetic quality of CWS facilities. The role involves performing routine building and preventative maintenance across various systems, completing essential repairs, and contributing to the upkeep of both indoor and outdoor spaces. Candidates with boiler experience have additional opportunities to conduct inspections and maintenance related to these systems.

Key responsibilities also include maintaining cleanliness in diverse areas such as offices, classrooms, kitchens, and restrooms, as well as handling tasks like sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, and managing waste removal. The General Maintenance Technician is responsible for completing maintenance work orders, managing inventory of tools and supplies, and coordinating with external contractors when specialist repairs are necessary. Keeping meticulous records of facility maintenance and safety protocols, including fire extinguisher inspections, fire drills, elevator inspections, OSHA logs, and other preventative measures, is crucial for compliance and operational efficiency.

Beyond regular maintenance duties, the role extends support to snow removal efforts, exterior grounds upkeep, pest control coordination, and emergency facility needs, ensuring the organization’s environments are safe and fully operational at all times. The technician will also play a supportive role in the Janitorial Training Program by demonstrating proper cleaning techniques and the use of relevant equipment to program participants, which underscores CWS’s commitment to workforce development embedded within the daily operations of its maintenance team.

Overall, this position offers a meaningful opportunity for individuals passionate about facility maintenance and community service to contribute to an impactful organization. Prospective candidates should be prepared to work independently, prioritize tasks efficiently, and collaborate effectively within a team, all while upholding high standards of safety and operational excellence. The role also provides a chance to develop skills in various trades, including plumbing, carpentry, painting, drywall, and boiler maintenance, supported by the organization’s encouragement for continuous learning and certification pursuits such as OSHA 30.
