Job Description
Indy Parks & Recreation has a rich history spanning over 100 years dedicated to advancing the value of parks and recreational services within the Indianapolis community. As a city agency, Indy Parks is committed to preserving and enhancing green spaces, providing high-quality recreational programs, and promoting inclusivity across all demographics regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, ability, or identity. The organization strives to create a vibrant, healthy, and welcoming environment where residents can connect with nature and each other, fostering a greater sense of community well-being. Operating within Indianapolis and Marion County, Indy Parks manages various facilities, programs, and services that cater to a diverse population. The agency prioritizes cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant workplace culture that enables its workforce to effectively serve the community's needs.
The role of the coordinator at Indy Parks & Recreation is essential to the success of various recreational and sports programming, aquatic activities, day camps, and other service delivery efforts. This position involves organizing and managing the daily operational tasks that keep facilities and programs running smoothly. The coordinator is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating a broad range of programs and events including special events, field trips, and seasonal classes. These duties require significant interaction with the community and collaboration with committees, boards, and other external partners. A critical aspect of the role is ensuring participant safety, which involves supervising activities, coordinating with risk management teams and maintenance staff, and maintaining clean and secure environments for all park patrons. This position requires adherence to established policies and occasionally exercising independent judgment when unexpected situations arise.
Moreover, the coordinator helps with recruiting, training, and evaluating onsite personnel, volunteers, and contractors, fostering a positive and professional atmosphere. Communication, both verbal and written, plays a vital role in this position. Coordinators work closely with the communications team to promote programs and events through social media and other marketing strategies. They are also responsible for the proper collection and deposit of revenues and maintaining accurate records for reporting and auditing purposes. The role demands proficiency with multiple software platforms including ActiveNet, InforPS, Microsoft Office Suite, Peoplesoft, NeoGov, and WebEx to organize and document work efficiently. As a public-facing position, coordinators assist in managing customer service relations, ensuring that all interactions reflect the agency's commitment to excellence and equity. Overall, this role offers a dynamic work environment that balances office responsibilities with hands-on involvement in community engagement and safety oversight, making it a pivotal position in supporting Indy Parks’ mission to enrich the lives of Indianapolis residents through innovative and inclusive recreational programming.
