Job Description
Trinity University, located in San Antonio, Texas, is a prestigious liberal arts university known for its commitment to academic excellence and cultural enrichment. Within its campus, the Michael and Noemi Neidorff Art Gallery serves as a vibrant hub for artistic expression and visual culture, supporting the Department of Art and Art History’s curricular programs and activities. Since its opening in 2006, the gallery has played a significant role in enhancing the university’s cultural landscape and fostering connections with the wider San Antonio community. Through its exhibitions and events, the gallery offers valuable engagement opportunities for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and local residents, making it an integral part of Trinity’s arts environment.
The Gallery Manager at the Michael and Noemi Neidorff Art Gallery is a full-time, exempt position focused on the comprehensive management and growth of the gallery’s operations and programming. With a salary range between $56,009.70 and $70,012.11, the role offers a competitive compensation package reflective of relevant experience and education. The Gallery Manager works collaboratively with the Gallery Committee and Department faculty to plan and execute approximately five exhibitions annually, including student shows, ensuring the highest standards in exhibition design, installation, and programming.
This multifaceted role requires expert oversight of the logistics and administration involved in running the gallery on a day-to-day basis. Responsibilities include planning, designing, and installing exhibitions; organizing related events such as lectures, gallery talks, workshops, and receptions; managing publicity efforts including press releases, social media, and website content; and handling all coordination related to shipping, receiving, and protecting artworks. The manager serves as a crucial liaison between artists, curators, vendors, and various stakeholders, maintaining open and effective communication.
In addition to exhibition management, the Gallery Manager is responsible for administrative tasks including budget development and management, record keeping, creating loan agreements, and collaborating with university and contract personnel. The role requires strong project and time management skills to handle multiple facets of gallery life concurrently. Oversight of gallery operations also involves maintaining secure and safe environments for artworks and facilities, supervising student workers, and mentoring emerging artists and curators.
The ideal candidate for this position will possess a bachelor’s degree (required) with a master’s degree preferred, and between one and five years of experience in gallery or museum management. Expertise in exhibition installation, art handling and shipping, safety and security protocols, and contemporary art aesthetics is essential. Additional skills in graphic design, photography, and fabrication are valued assets. This role demands a professional who is proactive, organized, and fosters collegial teamwork while exercising leadership and decision-making capabilities in a dynamic academic and community-based setting.
