The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at UPMC Shadyside is an award-winning team, having received the prestigious AACN Beacon Award twice. Focused primarily on surgical oncology patients, the Surgical ICU also provides expert care for critically ill medical patients with specialties in vascular, urological, and general surgical cases. The Patient and Family Concierge role at UPMC Shadyside’s Surgical ICU is vital to ensuring a seamless and supportive experience for patients, families, and visitors. This full-time position involves working three 12-hour shifts per week, typically from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., totaling 36 hours weekly. The Concierge serves as a compassionate liaison, offering information, assistance, and a warm presence throughout the hospital stay. The role requires versatility, adapting to a variety of responsibilities including destination coordination, environmental services, dietary support, patient transportation, telehealth support, and supply and equipment management. The Concierge’s primary mission is to enhance patient satisfaction and the overall quality of care by providing timely, courteous, and professional support from the moment patients and families enter the unit until discharge. Key tasks include greeting and guiding patients and visitors, coordinating access to hospital resources and services, maintaining cleanliness and organization of patient and public areas, assisting with meal delivery and dietary compliance, safely transporting patients and essential items within the hospital, managing telehealth equipment setup and maintenance, and ensuring the availability of necessary supplies and equipment. The Concierge must be proactive in addressing patient needs, responding to call lights, and facilitating communication between patients, families, and clinical staff. Demonstrated adherence to infection control, safety regulations, and hospital policies ensures a secure environment. The role also encompasses administrative duties such as answering phones, distributing care plans, and maintaining logs related to environmental hygiene, supply inventory, and equipment status. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or active High School/GED program enrollment or one year of previous job experience in lieu of HS Diploma/GED
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Must have desire, drive, and compassion needed to provide exceptional patient and family experience
- Previous experience in health care or customer service is a plus but not required
- Act 34 clearance
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with patients, families, and hospital staff
- Must be able to perform physical tasks such as transporting patients and moving equipment
- Must be reliable and punctual
- Must adhere to infection control protocols and hospital policies consistently
Job Qualifications

Job Duties
- Greet patients and families warmly and provide direction and escort assistance
- Disseminate patient information while respecting confidentiality
- Serve as a reference for visiting hours, directions, and hospital policies
- Issue courtesy parking discounts and free passes
- Assist with parking cashier functions and validate patient parking
- Clean and organize patient rooms, public areas, and equipment
- Replenish supplies and change bed linens in discharge and on-call rooms
- Assemble and serve meals according to diet orders and patient requirements
- Maintain food safety and quality by applying HACCP principles
- Deliver and set up patient meal trays and other nourishment
- Transport patients, patient-specific equipment, and lab specimens safely and timely
- Perform inspections and disinfect transportation equipment
- Record transportation data and report abnormal activities
- Retrieve and set up telehealth carts and decontaminate after use
- Test telehealth equipment weekly and report concerns
- Order and organize unit-specific supplies and equipment
- Deliver supplies, equipment, and medication to patient units safely and accurately
- Maintain refrigerator and temperature logs and check supply expiration dates
- Answer unit phones and transfer calls
- Respond to call lights under Nursing Assistant or PCT direction
- Interact and assess patient needs and round hourly
- Print and distribute daily plans of care
- Adhere to hand hygiene and infection control procedures consistently
- Follow mandatory reporting procedures for incidents
- Exhibit UPMC values and practice key behaviors
- Stay informed on navigation and usability of UPMC Patient Portal
- Perform other duties as assigned
